Sonatina for flute & piano, Op 76: Tendre

Emily Beynon

Sonatine for Flute & Piano, Op. 76: I. Tendre - Darius Milhaud

Flute: Emily Beynon
Piano: Andrew West

The Sonatine was written for Louis Fleury, who was one of the most important flautists in the first quarter of the twentieth century. He did much to raise the profile of the flute in twentieth-century composition and was a keen performer of contemporary music. Many works were dedicated to him, including Debussy’s Syrinx. Fleury premiered Milhaud’s Sonatine in January 1923 at a Concert Wiéner, with Jean Wiéner himself playing the piano part.

The first of the three movements, “Tendre” (Soft/Delicate) is the most lyrical. Sonata-allegro form is used in a manner that recalls the eighteenth century rather than nineteenth. Between the proper contrapuntal development section and the recapitulation is a section full of trills and mordents.

Piano: Andrew West

“Souple” (Flowing/Supple) shows the influence of Latin-American music and jazz that the composer had become acquainted with a few years earlier. Quite rhythmic, the movement features syncopation, with rhythmic patterns in five, though still notated in 6/8 meter. Folk-like melody also contributes to the dance-like quality. Quartal harmony and tone clusters are notable.

Designated “Clair” (Light/Clear) the third movement uses a modified sonata-allegro form. Typical of Milhaud, right after the two similarly constructed themes are heard separately, they are recalled in a fugato before the “development.” The second theme also serves as an ostinato. At the end of the movement, the principal subject from “Tendre” reappears, imbuing the sonatina with cyclical unity.

you seem to enjoy quidditch questions so ;) who's on the team?

Guilty as charged. Alright, so there’s Raj Patil, 7th year Beater. He doesn’t know his own strength, cracked a bat last year and the Bludger sailed over the Pitch into a group of Gryffindors walking down to Care of Magical Creatures, right into Dimmock. Probably why he’s got a thing against Beaters.

The other Beater’s Langdale Pike, 7th year as well. He’s a bit of a chatter, always having to tell him to stick his bat where his mouth is during practice. He’s a good Beater, though.

The Chasers’re Sarah Sawyer, Lucy Crace, and Soo Lin Yao. Sarah’s in 6th year. She’s incredibly smart and nice to boot, the kind who gets along with most everyone, but she’s tough too. When Zhi Zhu Yao came by practice to bother Soo Lin she hurled a Quaffle at him so hard it broke his arm. We’ve learned not to cross her.

Lucy Crace’s in 5th year, she’s sweet and a fantastic Chaser. Got scouted by the Hollyhead Harpies at the Ravenclaw game at the beginning of this year. She’s been going out with Andrew West from Gryffindor for the longest time.

Then there’s Soo Lin, 3rd year. I was a bit of a tosser at her tryouts, didn’t expect much of her since she was so small and quiet. Then she whipped the Quaffle at me hard enough to knock me out the hoop. Never underestimating her again.

The Seeker’s 4th year Andy Galbraith. He’s almost always got his foot lodged in his mouth, especially around Soo Lin. He’s got a good heart, though, and he’s willing to try anything, which is why I switched him to Seeker. Suits his build and speed much more.

Then there’s me, Keeper. So that’s the Hufflepuff team.

Watching my new copy of "Broken Saints"

I’d forgotten how much I love this series. Big ups to Newgrounds for continuing to carry the old DVD set, so I could replace mine for the second time now. Also? My autographed mini-comic is awesome. Brooke? Is that your signature on the front, or is is Andrew’s?

Anyway, I’mna go immerse myself in some animated comic epicness for a while.

Word is bond.

So, if you like Homestuck...

You’ll love Broken Saints. It was the first “animated comic book” ever released on the internet. Created back in 2001, it was created as a joint effort between Brooke Burgess, Ian Kirby, and Andrew West, with music by Tobias Tinker. It tells the story of four strangers who receive the same vision of an impending apocalypse, and find themselves drawn to the fictional “Coast City”, on the western coast of the United States. I risk going into spoiler territory if I say more, so I’ll just link a Youtube channel that has all 24 chapters, plus the bonus materials from the DVD release.

Check it out!
