Hello!
Tumblr is where tens of millions of creative people around the world share and follow the things they love.
Sign up to find more cool stuff to followso i dunno why i was thinking about this really, but, well, today in the car my dad said something, i don’t remember what it was but he said “girl” and then corrected himself and said “woman” and i was thinking about the use of the word “girl” and how even i feel weird about saying “woman” because it sounds formal which you know, is a whole other point we could go on for what i’m sure to some of you are obvious reasons. and i know. but what i am discussing today here is the way i use the word girl. and that’s generally if i’m talking about two people, one self-identified as a man and the other as a woman and i’ll say “yeah this guy and this girl”, as a counterpart. like i know “girl” can never truly shed its various connotations but in that context when people use it it doesn’t bother me because like, for a man there’s “man” and “guy” and “dude” (even though you can argue that that can be gender neutral at times. likewise you can also argue it’s a default to the masculine which is also true.) and a host of others but for women i find it can be more limiting. “chick” is one but some find that derogatory. for me it depends on context and situation.
idk just thoughts i guess the point is if i ever use the phrase “guy and a girl” it’s not, to me, in that particular context, infantilizing necessarily but if it bothers you let me know.
