Deutsche Bank analysts see 40 pct Greek haircut
Politicians, including German finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble have asked private creditors to Greece to accept steeper writedowns on their holdings than the 21-percent losses agreed last July.”A higher haircut for Greece can be engineered via three sources - a reduction in coupon, extension of maturity of the new bonds and a reduction in the principal amount,” Deutsche Bank said in its fixed income weekly note published on Monday.”For example, a reduction in coupon by 1 percent and a maturity extension by 10 years would result in an accounting haircut of 40 percent,” the bank said. This would still avoid a scenario of an outright default, and by using the existing agreement as a template, keep the governing law of the new bonds international rather than Greek, Deutsche said.Private sector initative “version two” would provide an opportuntity to clean bank balance sheets and stop short of a messy default at a time when eurozone banks are struggling to recapitalise, Deutsche Bank said.”A Greek PSI version two, along with a credible plan to recap banks would, we believe, provide a first step to isolate the financial sector from any potential contagion risks, as well as provide Ireland and Portugal time to distinguish themselves from Greece,” the note further said.Greece’s overall debt is forecast to climb to 357 billion euros ($491 billion) this year, or 162 percent of annual economic output — a level economists say is unsustainable. To reduce this mountain, euro zone leaders have been trying to convince banks to accept voluntary writedowns of up to 50 percent on their sovereign holdings. At the same time, they are trying to agree on a blueprint for recapitalising financial institutions at risk from the deepening crisis.
Another Apple Blowout Quarter. Once Again, The Street Blew It
tech.fortune.cnn.comThose poor analysts. Quarter after quarter, they just can’t seem to figure out Apple. At all.
It’s not like it’s their job or anything.
How Apple would approach making a TV
In the latest episode of Angry Mac Bastards, John Welch, Darby Lines and their lovely guest Kelly Guimont discussed an article from Business Insider, which cites UBS analyst Maynard Um titled “If Apple Television Is Next, Then So Is A “Genius Squad,” Says UBS”.
(The fun starts at time index 01:04:20)
They pulled the story apart pretty thoroughly, but there were two things in the article that got me thinking:
One newish idea from Um is that Apple will have to send out its geniuses to hook up Apple televisions in people’s homes. This would be another one of Apple’s competitive advantages, although Best Buy has a similar advantage.
and
What we envision of Genius Bar is similar to the Geek Squad, which is fairly well known in the US as Best Buy’s service department to facilitate technology adoption – television set installations, wireless router installations, repair services, content transfer from one PC to another, file backup, set-up services, general troubleshooting, tutorials, etc
Now to be clear: I don’t think Apple will or should build a TV, because this market is even more of a standard-resistant minefield than the cellphone business and the Apple TV seems to work fine for most people and helps Apple sell content.
Addressing Um’s two points —and talking entirely out of my ass here— this is what I think Apple would do:
- Build the device, the software and the packaging in a way that people won’t need help setting it up. In other words; make it idiot-proof.
- Get contracts in place with their favourite logistics providers that will have the delivery guy(s) carry the thing into the customer’s sitting room and maybe even heave it onto a wall.
The first thing is called intelligent design, which is something Apple seems to be really good at and the second thing is called outsourcing of non-integral tasks of the supply chain, something that Apple is also really good at.

In Defense of Politics
Recently, a friend of mine was thinking about starting a website to promote political activism, non-partisan, online community where people could come together to exchange ideas and organize political action. Personally, I thought this was a great idea, and being a political being myself was static to see it grow. However, when the time came to develop the core values and mission that would define the organization, he put together a group of young business minds that worship profit over everything else, including politics.
This made me start thinking about the world of politics and the skills that are required to navigate the industry. While it is true that politicians have been earning a certain reputation lately, does that mean that politics is not worthy of proper consideration? Maybe some politicians have forgotten what it is that brought them to public service and have become puppets, and sure, maybe the Supreme Court facilitates all of this. But there are two important things to remember: 1. Politics is bigger than your local elected politicians; it is everywhere and affects everyone, and 2. The abstract concept that we often tag as politics is not so abstract; it is composed of a group of highly educated and highly devoted men and women.
The thing with politics is that, against popular belief, it is not a man-made industry. There was never a question as to whether men should invent politics. The desire to lead or be led has been in our human nature since the development of the frontal lobe, it is this tendency to group into ranks that has allowed civilizations to come together and expand. So, for us to think that politics doesn’t affect us, that it is not a central part of who we are, or that it does not deserve our time is simply a ludicrous conviction.
Politics is one of the world’s major driving forces. For as long as we can trace it it has been evolving and adjusting, it has worn many hats and taken all sorts of shapes, some people hate it, some love it, but everybody is part of it.
I think we should consider ourselves lucky that there are still people out there who care, people that are not giving up on us and still devote their lives to bettering the political system we are dependent on. And it is not easy. There are no clear answers in politics and there is no obvious way to make everybody happy; it is all a frustrating process of trial and error. Political theories that work so well on paper come crashing down in the moment that the human factor is added. Yet, there are still strong and devoted souls that continue to put all their efforts into promoting political wealth and stability.
And I am grateful for them. I mean can you imagine a world without politics? You can’t, primarily because such scenario has never exited, and secondly, because if it were to exist the earth would be a terrifying place to live in. Try to think about modern life anarchy for a second. Think about the United States without a regulatory agency that controlled crime, commerce, infrastructure, education, national security, etc. Are we really prepared to put all these tasks on the hands nobody? The answer is No. I don’t know one single person that is comfortable with complete chaos. Naturally, it occurs to me that a political system of some kind is indispensible.
So, going back to my original point, if politics is as important as it is, and has been present for as many centuries as it has, what makes us think that politicians don’t have considerable training on the subject, and a deep understanding of the industry? Furthermore, if we expand the term politician to all active members of the political circle and include critics, analysts, speculators and even aficionados, it would be plain obnoxious to think for a second that anyone without knowledge and/or interest in the subject could do what they do. That my friend thinks he can enter the world of politics and social movements with a team that lacks the interest in the industry is not only comical but also a little insulting to the ones of us that do care.
Politics deserves more respect than that; it is a long-standing institution that has been serving us for as long as we can remember for no other reason than we need it. And while some people might think of this world as a group of dumb politicians, the truth is that politics encompasses everyone from legislators, to political analysts and commentators, to the armed forces and everyone in between. It includes everyone that has ever called the police or firefighters, received an unemployment check, or even crossed the road for that matter - who do you think that took care of building those roads and install traffic lights? I encourage everybody to partake in politics, the more people that take a stand and work towards a better, more honest future in government the better. All I say is that we should not to underestimate those who are already involved in public service because no matter how rough times might seem now, it is nothing in comparison to what it would be without them.

Nintendo Shares Fall Because Analysts And Speculators Are Stupid
gamasutra.comThis is a major problem with just about all industries. Analysts give their opinions, and stocks fan rise and fall based only on that. This is trivial because they’ll eventually recover (these kinds of stocks have no impact on a company the size and scope of Nintendo), but I really don’t know what else these analysts want. I know what they’re thinking: it’s going to be an expensive system, which automatically might turn off Nintendo’s more “casual” audience (IE: The people who bought the Wii because it was a fad, not because they cared about video games). But this just shows that these people shouldn’t be “analysing” a creative market like video games.
It’s going to be the same for the Wii U as it is for every other system: It’s The Games, Stupid. The Wii had some outstanding games for it, despite all the shovelware. The PS2 won over the more powerful Xbox in the last generation because it had a bigger, more impressive library. Same for the Super Nintendo, the original Game Boy, etc. If the games are good, the gamers will follow. And since the system is backwards compatible with all Wii games (and possibly Gamecube?), it’s not like the system’s just going away.
Let the analysts bitch in their suits. This is the first Nintendo system I’ve been excited for since I was giving hickeys in the back seat of my mother’s car.
