“A Thanksgiving Day meal with intentional insect ingredients is hardly the norm for most Americans, but it could be our future due to the cost, nutritional and environmental benefits of edible bugs.”

—“I’ll grab another slice of the Pumpkin Pie With Crickets!” Um, yum?

“If anything, I find that [Michael] Pollan’s critiques, especially, do not go far enough since they don’t effectively challenge inequality in the food system. Eating local, organic, seasonal food that you prepared yourself may be pleasurable but it is not universally so, nor is it tantamount to effecting social justice. Of course, Pollan is echoing what many in the alternative-food movement for years have asked us to do: buy sustainably produced food, so that the market will respond and the food system will eventually transform to provide food that is grown with attention to agroecological principles. Not only is that logic highly aspirational but … the alternative-food movement’s embrace of, well, alternatives that are in seeming opposition to what is bad in the food system works against broader transformation. This is because the creation of alternatives simultaneously produces places and people that for various reasons cannot be served by an alternative and therefore are put beyond consideration.”

Blog Shift

Well, it’s been a little while since I’ve posted here, but I have the BEST excuse.

I started med school! And not just any kind of med school—I am now proudly enrolled in a dual degree program in naturopathic and classical Chinese medicine in Portland, Oregon.* I will be in the program for six years, which is the longest commitment I’ve ever made.

You catch me, dear blogoverse, exactly one term into this adventure, so, lucky you, you’ve missed some of the more riveting what-do-I-really-want-to-do-with-my-life and what-will-become-of-my-beloved-Portland-youth-lifestyle discussions. It took some thorough internal examination and has led me to a really good place, literally and emotionally. What you have here is a very excited, yet grounded and hopefully, humble student of natural medicine.

So along with a name change from NewMessyDelicious.tumblr to DeliciousMedicine.tumblr this blog shifts its focus to include not only “the tastiest ideas from Portland’s alternative food cultures” but also:

• tidbits that I’m learning in school and how they apply to nutrition, delicious food, massage and herbalism

• what naturopathic and classical Chinese medicine are

• the process of learning these medicines

Thanks for reading. Let’s get started.

* Come see me in Portland, Oregon for massage therapy starting summer of 2013. By summer of 2017, I’ll be seeing clients for primary care, specializing in metabolic syndrome, nutrition and lifestyle coaching.

Chocolate cake made of Beans

image

What you need:

200g boiled black beans
100g butter
100g 70% chocolate
100g suger (if you are insulin resistant as I am or just want it to without sugar, just use 10g of Stevia or another kind of sweetner)
0,5dl cacao (just plain cacao without sugar)
1 fingertip of salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon soda
3 eggs

What you do:

  • Blend the beans, the butter and the sugar or the sweetner in a foodprocessor
  • melt the chocolate and then put it in the rest
  • Add the cacao, baking powder and soda
  • put one egg in a time
  • put them in muffin forms and then bake them in 20-35 min at 185 degrees celsius

And then you can put on whatever topping you like! :-)

Enjoy!

“The purpose of an engagement with whiteness is not to determine who is racist or not, but to uncover what whites think about being white and what effects that has on a racial system. ”

read this if you eat food:

sarahmmrow.wordpress.com

it’s finals season of winter quarter and that means one of three final papers are completed and i’m freaking the fuck out about the next one (it’s going to be something of a philosophization of the first.)

but here’s one for starters that i loved writing as much as i love eating so you should maybe give it a skim if the words healthy, organic, sustainable, vegan, local, or just mean anything to you.

I Can't Believe It's Not Pasta!

Mom made me spaghetti and noodles today. Except it wasn’t spaghetti, it was squash, and it was wonderful. It tasted just like spaghetti, and it’s ten times healthier for me. I have to admit at first I was a little hesitant to try it, but I had heard word from another friend, and I was convinced to try it. It’s really good. I recommend it. Tomorrow I think we are gonna try and add cheese to it, to make a sort of macaroni and cheese deal. Hmm.
