Prevenire lo scompenso cardiaco con la terapia genica
Un metodo innovativo basato sulla terapia genica potrebbe prevenire l’insufficienza cardiaca inibendo l’azione di una proteina determinante per l’insorgenza della patologia. Questo è quanto emerge dallo studio di Anastasios Lymperopoulos, ricercatore della Nova Southeastern University (NSU). I risultati della scoperta sono stati pubblicati sul Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
Il ricercatore ha individuato nella terapia genica un sistema per bloccare la beta-arrestina 1, una proteina che fa aumentare la produzione di aldosterone nel sangue da parte delle ghiandole surrenali. Un alto livello di aldosterone porta a un maggior riassorbimento di sodio e acqua all’interno dei reni causando un aumento del volume e della pressione del sangue. L’aumento di pressione riduce l’azione di pompaggio del cuore, può portare a fibrosi, ipertrofia, infiammazione ed è una delle cause principali di scompenso cardiaco.
Il prof. Lymperopoulos spera che sopprimendo la produzione della beta-arrestina 1 tramite la terapia genica si riesca a prevenire o quantomeno a ridurre la gravità di un’insufficienza cardiaca. Attualmente il ricercatore sta testando diverse tipologie di farmaci sia nuovi che già esistenti, fra cui Cozaar, Diovan e Atacand, per valutare la loro capacità di bloccare l’azione di questa proteina.

- I caught the bunny who’s been out and really hard to catch, so that’s cool.
- But he scratched the shit out of my hands and I have scratches and was bleeding and ugh. Stupid asshole rabbit.
- I hung out with Dave and Suzanne and stuff after class, so that was nice. We ate lunch and talked about periods.
- I sort of dozed off a bit ago, so I feel a little less tired.
