Sign upAbound Solar, recipient of Obama admin. loan, could become the next Solyndra
bloomberg.comFrom Bloomberg:
Abound Solar Inc., which received a $400 million U.S. loan guarantee to build two factories, shut down production and fired 180 people after panel prices fell by half last year.
Abound stopped making its first-generation solar panels and will refit its manufacturing lines to produce more efficient products, the Loveland, Colorado-based company said yesterday in a statement.
The move is a response to the same forces that drove Solyndra LLC into bankruptcy after it received a $535 million loan guarantee from the same U.S. Energy Department program, said Pavel Molchanov, an analyst at Raymond James & Associates Inc. in Houston.
Not Again! Another Green Energy Company Goes Belly Up, Taxpayers Stiffed For 68 Million Dollars
Does everybody know what the definition of insanity is? Honest-to-God truth, the clinical definition of insanity is repeating the same actions over and over again while expecting different results.
So who wants to explain to me why the Obama Regime keeps doling out more and more money to these green energy businesses that are proven failures, and why in God’s name do they think “it’ll be different this time”? If you said it’s because they’re insane, you would be correct!
And now what do we have? A company called Abound Solar that walked around like a rooster strutting its stuff proudly proclaiming they were the “anti-Solyndra.” They’re broke and out of business and all 125 employee’s jobs were terminated, and for good measure all of us taxpayers got stiffed to the tune of 68 million dollars. And still, Barack Obama is wasting our money by funding even more of these failures.
Colorado-based Abound Solar claimed seven months ago that his company was the “anti-Solyndra,” the green-energy firm has filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation. It is terminating all 125 workers at its Loveland, Colo. headquarters.
None of these green energy companies should get one thin dime of taxpayer money, ever. If they can’t do it in the private sector, I guess they just don’t. I sure as hell don’t want to keep subsidizing failure, and nobody has the right to expect me to do so.

In hard times, a solar startup focuses on soldiers (and drones!)
#SuryaRay #Surya Solar material startups are struggling like they’re selling pet food online in 2001. But could the military be an answer in these hard times? Venture capital-backed solar startup Alta Devices has decided to start selling its solar modules for applications for both soldiers and for drones that spy on and attack enemies.
Alta unveiled two designs on Friday that are charging mats of 10-watts and 20-watts, both of which are much smaller than other solar charging mats out there. Alta plans to make the cells at its existing, 2 MW production line and hire another manufacturer to put the cells into the mats.
The company’s CEO, Chris Norris, told us Alta also plans to announce a military contract within the month, and from there raise a new round of funding in 2013 to build a 40MW factory, which could end up being located in Asia. Alta Devices was founded in 2007 and has raised $120 million in venture capital from investors such as Kleiner Perkins and Dow Chemical.
Solar-powered soldiers
A soldier’s pack could weigh 100 pounds, and over a third of that are batteries to power various communications and safety devices. Alta claims its solar chargers could reduce that battery heft by 70 percent, or roughly 25 pounds.
The company says it can pack more charging power into a small footprint than other solar cell developers because it’s developed a process for harvesting more energy from a set of materials that already are inherently better at turning sunlight into electricity than the more common materials. Alta’s solar cells can convert a whopping 28.8 percent of the sunlight they take in into electricity, compared with the mid- to high-teens that most common solar cells on the market can achieve today.

Why isn’t Alta targeting rooftop solar panels yet? Currently Alta’s panels are more expensive than the less efficient but abundant solar cells that have been flooding the market in recent years. So Alta had to look elsewhere for its initial set of customers, and the military, unlike utilities, power plant builders, and home owners, are more willing to pay a premium for more power in a small space. Down the road when Alta decreases its manufacturing costs, it could go after rooftops.
Alta is hardly alone among the solar manufacturing startups that have been forced to pivot their business plans because the market for conventional solar panels has way too many suppliers. That imbalance of supply and demand has caused high-profile bankruptcies of startups who couldn’t reduce their production costs quick enough. Solyndra, Abound Solar, Global Solar Energy and Twin Creeks Technologies are among the startup casualties.
The challenges that Alta and other solar startups have faced also are plaguing companies working on batteries for electric cars. Electric car sales haven’t grown as quickly as expected by tech companies, and that has sent battery developers to look for alternative markets, such as consumer electronics. But even there, the startups face tough competition from battery giants that have ruled the world of computers, cell phone and other mobile devices for a long time.

Pressure from the Government into Bankruptcy!
This week’s article is about an investigation by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce into the bankruptcy of a company called Abound Solar, based in Loveland, CO. The committee was investigating whether or not the Obama Administration was pressuring a consultant to arrange a loan guarantee by the federal government to Abound. The committee wanted to get information from the White House about what the Department of Energy knew about the problems with the loan guarantee. The company went bankrupt last summer after spending $7 0million of the loan guarantee and it laid off 125 workers. There was a series of emails from the Department of Energy to the consultant that appear to pressure the consultant to arrange the loan. Other emails suggested that the consultant did not think it was wise to arrange the loan.
First of all, pressuring someone to do something they think is wrong is incomprehensible. It is puzzling why the federal government would pressure the consultant to arrange the loan when he didn’t think it was a good idea. He was proven right when the company went bankrupt. This episode sounds very similar to the Solyndra debacle, in which another solar panel maker went bankrupt after spending over $500 million of a federal loan guarantee. I feel angry that our government is pressuring people to approve projects that cost the American people millions of dollars and then the projects fail. Having that happen once is maddening. Having it happen twice makes me livid.

Abound Solar, White House Being Investigated By Congressional Committee

A solar panel corporation Abound Solar, that President Obama has been working with has gone bankrupt after investing $400 million dollars in it. They laid off 125 workers and used up $70 million dollars of the loan guarantee. The company didn’t want to comment. Representatives from the House Subcommittee on Energy and Power said they all knew in advance that this company had financial issues. Even though it was clean Abound Solar had severe financial issues congress wanted to move this company forward. There is no solid proof that this was for political advantage but it was speculated.
I personally don’t understand investing money into businesses that are going under. If they are failing, they are failing indefinitely. If they couldn’t save themselves, then why try and save them? They obviously weren’t managing their money right, or their product wasn’t good enough. Invest money in businesses that are thriving so they can help you out later. And if politicians are trying to get some advantage by throwing away money into useless corporations then they are stupid. Straight up. Throw your money away into good companies so that they can actually help you out. Politicians are always going to be dirty swindlers so just be a dirty swindler in the right way.
