    Sore Eyelids

One of Suis La Lune’s sideprojects. The other one is a black metal band (lol) called Skeletor (double lol).

This sounds like something in the vein of The Hated-ish kind of emo. I never did like The Hated, I was more into the Slint-y kind of emo, but this I actually dig.

Remember when our band was in a worldwide compilation CD with Suis La Lune? Man, that band sucked.

Currently listening to the album “Spiderland” by Slint. Definitely check out this band if you like really early post-rock and math rock. These guys are known as the godfathers of the previously stated sub-genres.

    Spiderland

    Goodnight my love
Remember me as you fall to sleep
Fill your pockets with the dust and the memories
That rises from the shoes on my feet

    I won’t be back here
    Though we may meet again

    I know it’s dark outside
    Don’t be afraid
Everytime I ever cried from fear
Was just a mistake that I made
    Wash yourself in your tears
    And build your church
On the strength of your fears

    Please
    Listen to me
    Don’t let go
Don’t let this desperate moonlight leave me
    With your empty pillow
Promise me the sun will rise again

    I too am tired now
Embracing thoughts of tonight’s dreamless sleep
    My head is empty
    My toes are warm
    I am safe from harm

    - Washer by Slint

Such a good song to listen to on winter nights. Oh, and Good Morning, Captain also.

nyctaper >> Papa M at Knitting Factory, NYC: 11/18/2009

David Pajo, who performs in various configurations as Aerial M and Papa M, is the kind of artist who inspires fervor among fans not for the relentless bombast of his music, or his stage presence, or probably even his indie cred (although one has to point out that David’s having been a founding member of Slint, is pretty damn huge). Rather, he is that unique kind of artist who, by playing restrained, complex instrumental guitar music, proves that “rock” can inspire and enthrall without screaming its head off. The songs in this melancholy set occasionally build to crescendos, sure, but the release is subtle when compared to the euphoric wad-blowing of other excellent instrumental bands like Explosions in the Sky.

Highlight of an already-good day! I did not expect access to this very exciting live renaissance of Pajo’s great 90s project. I refuse to describe the music, because it would remind you of a whole canon of shite that is nowhere near as wonderful.

    The Postal Service

One of my favorite bands is barely a band at all. Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie and Jimmy Tamborello who performs and records as Dntel formed The Postal Service after the former recorded some vocals for the latter’s record in 2001. They barely knew each other and lived in different cities but thought there was something going on creatively between them. So what they did was record separate song parts and mail them back and forth through the US Postal Service (thus the name). Read more.

In December 2001, Gibbard started receiving CD-Rs from Tamborello filled with beatsy electronic music, which he manipulated in his computer before writing melodies and lyrics and recording vocals. He also added some guitar, drums and keyboards — much of which was recorded by Death Cab guitarist Chris Walla at his Hall of Justice studio — and then sent the demo back to L.A. Gibbard had to run his changes past Tamborello, but he more or less had the freedom to alter the songs to his liking.

“It was really great to get a little package every month or two — ‘Two new songs!’” says Gibbard. “Sometimes I’d say, ‘I want to move that part and this part,’ and it was really fun to have such autonomy in the writing; I could pretty much do whatever I wanted.”

Though Tamborello (also known for his work in Strictly Ballroom and Figurine) is no stranger to collaboration — everyone from Beachwood Sparks’ Chris Gunst to That Dog’s Rachel Haden to Slint/The For Carnation’s Brian McMahan appeared on Life Is Full of Possibilities — this was the first time he had attempted a project with a relative stranger.

“It was like having to work on the album and make friends at the same time,” admits Tamborello. “In the beginning I was probably a little nervous about not wanting to say I didn’t like something ’cause I didn’t know him. But in the end it didn’t end up ever being an issue. It seemed like I was always excited with what he did.”

The final product was a masterpiece called “Give Up”. Gibbard and Tamborello report that there will probably never be a second Postal Service album. They did it. It’s done.

Will Oldham on Wes Anderson and the dying indie record industry

AVC: To change gears toward the business side, the news broke recently that the indie label and distributor Touch And Go is having trouble. Do you have any idea yet how that’s going to affect your label Drag City?

WO: I’m sure it’s going to affect Drag City in a major way. Touch And Go, Thrill Jockey, and Drag City are all at least superficially closely tied because they’re all in Chicago. Touch And Go was the leader historically among those labels and many other labels. It precedes Matador, it precedes Merge; it’s probably of the same vintage of SST. It became this incredible label with so many incomparable records and incomparable bands, and then it developed into a distributor. It can’t close its doors or significantly change its way of working without affecting a label like Drag City. But also as friends, as colleagues, as a model for how to do business… It’s a huge deal.

I heard that Touch And Go might downsize to the point of being a two-person operation, and that’s a lot to chew on for everybody. I don’t even know where to begin thinking about what that means to my friends who are in Slint, when they’re ready to do re-releases or re-masters. Or Quarterstick bands like the Mekons. Does it mean that we’re getting to the point where we’re gonna stop making records? Is it getting to where the way kids are taking in music is… I don’t know, the world of ringtones? Is that music? I’m not sure. But I know it’s a big deal.

Live Shows, Fifty of, Seen by Andy Pixel

Previously posted as a Facebook note, but worthy of repeating here.

…And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead Bottom of the Hill in SF 2000 or 2001
Avail Velvet Elvis in 1998 or so. Danced so hard I almost passed out.
Aviso Probably saw this band in Tacoma.
Bad Religion Moore Theater, 1993. Green Day opened.
Badly Drawn Boy Showbox in 2001, he played for three hours, drank about 10 cocktails, and smoked at least a pack of cigarettes.
    Bikini Kill Capitol Theater, 1993.
Boss Hogg Moe, 1996. Jon Spencer’s wife is HOT.
Built to Spill OK Hotel, 1994
Crackerbash OK Hotel, 1992, with Gas Huffer I think? Then again at the Crocodile for their reunion tour in 2006.
David Pajo Breakroom, 1999. He sat down on the stage and no one could see him. Intensely boring.
Do Make Say Think Paradox, 2002.
Fifteen Jalapeno House in the U-District in 1994.
Fugazi the first time: at the Oz, 1993; the last time: in Vancouver BC in 2002.
Godspeed You Black Emperor! Crocodile Cafe, 2000. One of the most engrossing sonic experiences of my life.
Harvey Danger Crocodile Cafe, 2004. Didn’t this band break up?
Hazel Velvet Elvis, 1995. With Sleater Kinney?
Jawbreaker Capitol Theater, 1994. Oh man what a great show.
    Les Savy Fav Graceland, 2002.
    Lucero Crocodile Cafe, 2007.
Lync Velvet Elvis in 1994. Hush Harbor also played. Modest Mouse opened.
Miles Tilmann 2002. Didn’t he play at the Moore Theater? Or was it just next door?
Mudhoney Paramount, 1992. Ultra Lame Fest. I got knocked unconscious in the pit. Held hands with a girl for the first time ever.
Nomeansno In Ireland in 1996. They happened to be playing the day my family was traveling through Dublin, and they were also on the ferry we took back to London the next day. I interviewed them for my “zine.” Also saw them at Moe in 1994, it was the first and only show I ever got into with a fake ID. The bouncer looked at Greg Noel’s expired license, which listed me as 21 years old and 6’. “You’re six feet tall?” he asked. “No, it’s a typo,” I countered. He shrugged and let me in.
NOFX King Cat Theater, 1994. How embarrassing.
Propagandhi Loved them at the Capitol Theater in 1994, HATED them at 924 Gilman in 1995.
    Rancid Capitol Theater, 1994. Yo-Yo A-Go-Go.
The Mr. T Experience Radio House, 2000.
    Rilo Kiley Graceland, 2002.
Sage UPS Student Union Building in Tacoma, 1992. My first rock show ever. With My Name and Inspector Love and the Ride Me Babies.
Screw 32 the Radio House, 1995. Was this the time they toured with Schlong?
Seaweed Temple Theater in Tacoma, 1992. The first two rows of theater seating got flattened under the pit.
Severna Park Breakroom, 1997. Met Adam McDaid for the first time.
    Slint Showbox, 2005.
Smart Went Crazy Velvet Elvis, 1998. After the show I asked them for a ride to their next gig in Boise. They said yes.
Smelter my living room, 1993. Could this band get back together, please?
Sunny Day Real Estate Pain in the Grass at the Mural Amphitheater, 1994?
Ten O Seven Redmond Firehouse, 1994.
The Beastie Boys End Fest, 1992. MCA had a bright green flat top. One of the last times I crowd-surfed.
The Dead Milkmen OK Hotel, 1994.
The Decemberists Crocodile Cafe, 2004. I found them exceedingly boring live.
The Go! Team Showbox, 2005. Definitely one of the top five best live shows of my life. The entire venue was dancing.
The Halo Benders OK Hotel, 1994.
The Hold Steady Crocodile Cafe, 2006. The quintessential bar band.
The Most Secret Method Matt Hodge & Ryan Parks’s house, 1999? With Juno?
The Odd Numbers OK Hotel, 1994. This is one of my fondest show memories. A rainy day, a matinee show, only ten people in the club, and half of them were dancing.
The Promise Ring RKCNDY, 1999. Burning Airlines and Juno opened.
Thunderbirds Are Now! Chop Suey, 2006. Another one in the top five. The venue was at about a quarter capacity but they played as if they were in a sold-out stadium. I’ve not seen a band match their energy since At the Drive-In.
    Treepeople OK Hotel, 1992. *Sigh*
Unwound X-Ray Cafe in Portland, 1994. My family was staying in Portland and they happened to be playing right down the street.
“Weird Al” Yankovic Paramount Theater, 1993. Nerdy!
