Independent research

I would like to study the relationship between physical typography, sound and vibrations, and their effect on our consciousness and emotions.

“A mantra is a sound, syllable, word, or group of words that is considered capable of “creating transformation” (Wikipedia.com).

The reason that they are believed to cause spiritual transformation is because sound vibrates- and vibrations are the effects of molecules changing position, of chemical changes taking place. My deduction is that then, we can physically change ourselves on a molecular, maybe even spiritual level by experiencing vibrations.

I’ve begun to do some research into language, and sound and read about how mantras are used to access “levels of consciousness and healing that are submerged in the depths of our awareness.”

In my own personal experience I’ve never touched vibrating letters, or groups of words and I’m curious to explore what my own reaction would be. Maybe this exists already, and if it does I’m curious to find out about other people’s experiences.

Repeating mantras in yoga does have physical effects on me- if I repeat certain syllables I can see a change in my mood- but I’m wondering what touching them would do- if anything.

We have been integrating words in our environment through 2d graphics and signs, printed and flat for a long time. Typographic development in our space has started to become more 3d but still very limited in our interaction. So the second part of my exploration will revolve around physical vibrating type in our space. I’m still brainstorming what this would be like- and solutions to make this happen.

I’m also in the process of modeling a 3D font- or rather just words. We have assumed that a 3d letter has the same qualities in front as in back, which is just as naive as stating that human beings should have the same front as the same back. So in my modeling I’m exploring how type would change through it’s transition from 2d to 3d. I’m teaching myself Cinema 4D for the purposes of showing the different possibilities that could happen in the “middle” of the letters.

For example, people in the “middle” have liquids, structures (organs), space, air ect- what would that look like in type? If I model vibrating molecules within the structure of an “o” would they be much different than when it is “oh” or “om”.

This needless to say, is going to take a long time- so for my immediate future it’s just about learning how to make letters vibrate with an Arduino type of solution. If anyone has any suggestions or knowledge about letters’ specific vibrations and how to replicate those x mhz, please let me know!
