So my friend Amy tricked me into watching a dumb rom-com by saying it had some really interesting social commentary and was a discussion starter. She knows my weakness.
As someone who rejects the concepts of soul mates, “The One”, destiny and forever as inherently false, TiMER was really interesting! It presented these ideas easily and then challenged you ot put yourself in a situation where you had to grapple with them. And then the last ten minutes said “fuck you and your critical thinking, Allison. This is a goddamn rom com and we will push the idea of a destined one true love as true. damn the consequences”.
If you have 90 minutes you’re planning on wasting anyway, yeah, sure, check it out. And then message me so we can weep together.
“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

This movie is a purely visual feast. The actors are also great (Charlize being the main event) and they knew how to make you invested in characters. Kristin Stewart is fine in this role (my theory is that she hates Twilight as much as the next person and plays Bella to be stupid) and it’s always nice having Chris Hemsworth in the film. They played down the romance, which is refreshing…but at the same time I heard a lot of people complain that they were just lazy with it. Filmmakers can never win I suppose. Having the romance would be too obvious, but taking it out made women (at least they were the people I heard complaining about it) irritated. Just goes to show you that you need a romance because people expected it.
All in all, some imaginative stuff and beautiful imagery/costuming (Alexander McQueen on Charlize all day!) mixed with the action of a summer movie, make this an enjoyable watch.
