August 23rd: Why is Gene special to you?
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
Gene is more than just a handsome face. We can talk on and on about how good-looking he is. But many men have handsome faces. What makes Gene any different from the rest? Maybe it’s something we see in eyes..something we hear in his soft voice..or that we see in the way he moves…He’s captivating.
So talented in more ways than one, and able to always make me smile if ever I feel blue, all I have to do is listen to him sing or watch him dance..and I’m in another world, where all is well. It’s like the man said himself, “we dance love, we dance joy, we dance dreams” and Gene makes it so easy to imagine yourself dancing with him off in the clouds…and I am grateful for that.

Day 23: Why is Gene special to you?
There is much that I could say about Gene Kelly. But ultimately my affection for him comes down to two things:
Gene Kelly means joy. When I watch him dance, it never fails: I feel a grin as wide as his spreading across my face. He seems to take immense pleasure in the mere ability to move and to bound across the screen with unceasing energy. Even when he’s not dancing, that disarming boyishness informs his presence and persona.
Gene Kelly means inspiration. He makes dancing look fun, but not necessarily easy. Because he puts his heart on his sleeve and lets you see how hard he is working, he instills in you the hope (and in most cases, it’s only a hope) that if you work as hard as he does, you, too, can do what he does. Few influences in my life have been as inspirational as the great Eugenius C. Kelly. He’s like an old friend to me, and I wish somehow he were still here so I could tell him.

Tough question! In the movies, “Love is Here to Stay.” Outside of the movies, “My Baby Just Cares for Me.” And I also love “If I Could Be With You (One Hour Tonight),” which one can hear on Sue’s website.

“I Could Write a Book,” because he sang it in Pal Joey but also because the lyrics describe what it’s like to be infatuated with someone. So many others: I’ve Got a Crush on You,” “I’m Getting Sentimental Over You,” “These Foolish Things,” “Them There Eyes“…
