I have a bit of an announcement.
This is my sister’s (and brother-in-law’s) dog. His name is Zulton.
He’s a military service dog who just recently retired. They worked so hard to be able to bring him home, and my brother-in-law loves him unconditionally. Zulton is extremely important to them.
But just after two or so weeks of being happily retired, he became ill and had to go into surgery. The cost of each examination is absolutely ridiculous, and even though he is now doing better, bills are still managing to pile up.
Here is the explanation: “Military Working Dog Zulton (retired) is currently living at home with his handler. He has adjusted well but since has fell ill. He is getting tested for what the cause of his illness is and each test is expensive. Since Military Working dogs are currently classified by the Department of Defense as equipment they are not provided any healthcare benefits once they retire. There is a bill trying to get passed that allows these service animals to get healthcare coverage once they have served their country, but until then, it is left for the care taker to cover it. As any other medical bills, vet bills are very expensive and we would appreciate any donation to MWD Zulton’s healthcare costs.”
Let me highlight a certain sentence: “Since Military Working dogs are currently classified by the Department of Defense as equipment they are not provided any healthcare benefits once they retire.”
Please, if you care about dogs or animals in general, read this. Donate, or do as they ask and consider writing a letter to your congressman to get the bill passed. Dogs shouldn’t be considered equipment; they are living and breathing and help so many people.
