What are "Domestic Magics"?

I use the term “Domestic Magics” to refer to a lot of individual subsets of magic (and their related spells and rituals) in my practice… But what is “Domestic Magic”?

Domestic:

  1. Of or pertaining to the home, the household, household affairs, or the family.
  2. Devoted to home life or household affairs.

It stands to reason, therefore, that “Domestic Magics” are any magic, spells, or rituals which have a foundation in or around, or an effect on the home and one’s family and guests; the most common subsets of Domestic Magics are Cottagecraft, Hearthcraft, and Kitchencraft- sometimes even Greencraft depending on your definition of it and what it entails.

Most practitioners conflate Kitchencraft, Cottagecraft, and related systems of folk practice into “Cottagecraft” as a catch-all. Personally, however, I like to make a distinction between these practices as individual entities.

  • Cottagecraft

A denomnative form of Witchcraft with a focus on domestic magics involving general home and household duties, crafting and DIY, home protection, and similar things.

  • Kitchencraft

A denomnative form of Witchcraft with a focus on domestic magics involving cooking, baking, food, the kitchen, and similar things.

  • Hearthcraft
A denomnative form of Witchcraft with a focus on domestic magics involving family and friends, protection, fire, fiber-based arts and crafts, and similar things.
  • Greencraft
A denomnative form of Witchcraft with a focus on domestic magics involving herbalism (magical or non), gardening, foraging and wildcrafting, wildlife and insects, and similar things.

If I really need a catch-all term for simplicity’s sake, then I call them “Domestic Magics” as a way to retain their individual definitions while still using a generalized, all encompassing, and relevant term.
