This is about the writer Virginia Woolf and what if…
(in some ways this is the opposite of
the last poem. In this one, maybe a woman
walks into the river and a teenage girl is
pulled from the sea?)

Virginia

.

Patterns of drying mud lead

from an open door to a desk

beneath a window, where fruit

flies circle a bottle of wine and

an unfinished poem curls from

the paper finger of a portable

Underwood typewriter.

Hanging, from the back of a

chair, a wool overcoat stands

in a pool of water—its pockets

filled with stones from the river—

while, on the terrace, a young

and giddy Mrs Dalloway is

holding a wild flower and

being kissed.
