this one goes out to the fellas.

This week’s edition of SSW, street style wednesday is dedicated to all the men who are holding it down on the style front day in and day out.  In a modern age where most interaction happens via the internet, many gripe that men no longer put in the effort to dress well (have you seen an episode of Mad Men or Boardwalk Empire??)  This post is for the unsung heroes.  the modern day gentlemen.

Brunch at the Mondrian

The place to see-and-be-seen was the perfect location to accommodate a birthday brunch to remember.  Last Saturday, Eugenie Grey (www.feralcreature.com) hosted an influencer birthday brunch along side with Herringbone x Suja and Instabrand in West Hollywood. What better way to entice fashion bloggers than an atmosphere that called for sassy personality drinks and lavish photo ops at every corner!

urban oasis.

Perhaps we really REALLY miss Palm Springs and we’re channeling some of that amazing ambiance right here in the heart of Orange County.  Located right across the street from South Coast Plaza is a lovely tranquil sculpture garden by Isamu Noguchi that we highly recommend you visit.  Perhaps after your credit cards needs a breather from all that shopping?

This week we’re showing off the BEAUTIFUL design of a couple of our favorite new finds in this urban oasis.  First up is quite possibly the coolest backpack we’ve seen in some time by Band of Players.  The rectangular design, navy leather and silver accents make this a modern, fresh choice for the of-the-moment bag.

Now we know what you’re thinking: “Leather for Spring??”  And we say: “YESSS!”  Gone are the days of strict fashion rules you must adhere to lest you fall prey to the fashion police.  Your favorite textiles are viable year round given the right cut and styling.  Here Amen Couture has made a brown leather pleated skirt that is as amazing to touch as it is to see.  (Look at it twirl!)

And if you’re jonesing for Palm Springs like us… make sure to get your tickets for Coachella on sale now!

This past weekend we went on another adventure that further supports our theory that if you dress for adventure you will find it! (plus go to the desert where there’s 8 parties going on any day)  If you follow us on instagram (hello? where have YOU been?) then you know we made the trek to Palm Springs this weekend to join many others in search of good company and great music.

We’ll be frank Day 1 and Day 3 were… poorly recorded as we were too busy having fun with our newly made friends but we managed to get our act together on Day 2.  The real lesson here being: work hard, play harder.  Don’t forget to live life because you’re too busy recording it’s existence on social media.

And thank you to our many new friends who fed us, entertained us, liquored us, and most importantly glitterbombed us!  Somewhere out there are photos of us being showered/christened with blue glitter floating around… let us know if you find them =)

packing for a weekend getaway: SXSW edition

Whether you’re counting down the minutes till you can break free for the weekend or planning your next getaway thanks to some good weather, here’s a sneak peek into what we’re packing for our trip.  SXSW style.

Must-have wardrobe essentials you can wear year-round.  Perfect for our transitional winter-spring weather or jetting off to warmer climes.  Next time you’re packing for a trip (which is hopefully later today) keep these tips in mind:

  • light-weight and layered: be prepared for any adventure with light-weight pieces that can be layered for colder weather or more formal occasions (ie. button-ups, heathered shawl cardigan, cognac blazer)
  • weekend bag:  this is a cross between your backpack and a carry-on.  perfect for a weekend getaway.  If you don’t already own one, you should in leather or canvas.  Ours is a classic Ralph Lauren navy canvas with cognac leather trim.
  • texture/pattern:  keep it interesting with patterns or textures for an added pop and quick ways to change up your look paired with the essentials. Hot prints for spring: plaid, tropical floral, bandana and camo.

Throw in a couple button-ups, socks, and a pair of pants (or shorts for the sartorial crowd) and you’re good to go.  As we say here at W H I M, dress for a successful weekend.

creme de la creme.

Neutral dressing is far from boring when clothing yourself with the best your money can buy.  We’re not suggesting you spend this month’s rent money on the perfect, chic outfit but spend wisely and invest in timeless pieces that you’ll wear forever.

We believe that every man (and woman) should own a suit.  FIT IS KEY and try a classic print like glen plaid for a subtle effect.  Paired with a two-tone paisley sleeved button-up and color-blocked loafers take this look to the Nth level.

Neutral dressing can also have a greater impact if it’s head to toe.  Monochrome dressing is easy when you do it in shades of the same color family.  And our tip for getting more mileage out of your favorite winter coats?  Wear them like capes or shrugs with cropped pieces.

what’s better than fashion?  FRIENDS =)

This week’s SSW theme is fashion friends.  It’s our sartorial version of having our cake and eating it too.  The only thing we love more than fashion are our friends (and family).  And whether your looks are complementary or you’re twinning, fashion friends are en vogue.

end of days.

As summer comes to an end we’re grateful for the extra long fun-filled days and what seemed like a never-ending vacation month of August.  We find ourselves eager for the fall session much like in our grade school days.  Excited to slip back into our fall “uniforms” and to reunite with our mates.  Never mind our birthdays are this month!

We dedicate this post to the last days of summer.  Flirting with the heat in our seasonally appropo? outerwear (yes that’s sequins for daytime) and holding onto our cropped pieces for fall (we’re not ready to give them up.)

Thank you for the belly-aching laughs, impromptu dance floors, stolen kisses, breathtaking sights, and unforgettable weather.  Here’s to many more beautiful summers =)

the great classics.

You’ve probably heard the phrase “what’s old is new again” and thanks to fashion’s constantly evolving nature this is true pretty much every season.  Mens suiting fabrics such as houndstooth check, tweed, and seersucker all had major moments in SS14 collections.  The update?  Break up the classic suiting with crop tops (or crop shorts) and have your work wear doing double duty.

Happy President’s Day!  Last month thanks to Free Museum Day we were able to spend the day taking in the arts at LACMA.  We visited many old favorites (Picasso, Kandinsky, Sargent) and discovered a few new ones.  We highly recommend checking out “Agnes Varda in Californialand” exhibition featuring the “grandmother of french new wave”.  Although we should warn you it’s a little nsfw ;)

FYI Thanks to Target everyone receives free admission to LACMA today!

summertime sadness.

Okay this title was originally intended to be ironic but now as we review this spread there is a certain melancholy that washes over us.  Perhaps we’re subconsciously lamenting the retiring of our favorite coats and suits due to the coming summer season (not to mention freakish summer weather we’re already experiencing here in cali).  It’s pretty apparent by now that we love tailored looks.  Blazers, suits, slacks, car coats, trench coats, woven button-ups… we just can’t get enough!

For those of you lucky enough to wear your tailored pieces year-round, don’t hate us for our palm trees and sunshine.  For we envy you for your tweeds, tartans, and cashmere <3.

Wait were we supposed to use this copy to go on about the awesomeness of our clothing and accessories?  Whoops, comment if you’d like more details and we’ll be happy to get our act together for your inquiries.

the office.

One of the benefits of working in fashion is that it’s never boring, especially in freelance.  Our workspace changes almost daily and our coworkers even more so.  This week we were sweating it out on set at Snow Studio in DTLA for a new women’s line HYPR. (You may be familiar with their popular men’s offering Hypercrush Clothing.)

Our muse was the lovely Nastya @ HMMLA, a Russian beauty who is not only blessed genetically but has some pretty sweet dance moves too!  She immediately blew us away when she came into the casting (early!)  Warm, funny, patient, and hard-working, there’s not much more you can ask for.  We want to keep her but alas she’ll only be in LA for the summer.  Many hearts will be broken come September…

We also got to meet an artist we’ve been huge fans of for some time now, make-up artist Anthony H. Nguyen.  We love following his instagram for the make-up tips, flawless artistry, and some EPIC halloween makeup.  Best Ursula we’ve ever seen.  GO check it out NOW.  You can thank us later.

Oh and did we mention we had a DJ onset for our shoot?!?  Pretty amazing experience and worked better than any amount of coffee consumption to get our creative juices flowing.  We definitely vote for DJ’s on all sets going forward!

Many thanks to the awesome team at Hypercrush Clothing for being such a pleasure to work with and of course our homie Yoshino for being the best bossman we could hope for ;)

Memoirs of a Garçon 1

There is not a single thing that qualifies what a work of art could be.  Art is relied heavily upon the context and our assumptions of what art really is.  Taking an object and inserting it into a context where it’s visible communicates it both directly and indirectly.  Sometimes I think art can be very pretentious, but it’s so much more than just what you see.  It fills a void in space and transforms a wall into a passage into history and culture.

Last weekend, I revisited the beloved LACMA, the land where potential “mysterious” boyfriends and low-key rich old ladies come to appreciate the a brew of cubism, expressionism, fauvism, and many more!  I wanted to share some of the photos I took that haven’t posted on our instagram (@_whatshisismine).  Enjoy! :)

Now that you’ve made it through hump day and are wondering how you’re going to muster up the energy to make it to the weekend… WHIM would like to offer a little downtown cool.  Whether these help inspire a little bad ass in your outfit or an adventure downtown this weekend, we’ll consider that a job well done.

not your average ootd.

Here at WHIM, we aspire to combine our love of fashion, art, and photography producing imagery that goes beyond your average ootd, outfit of the day.  (Hey when we can figure out how to include food in the mix, WE WILL.)  It’s important to us that we not just be a fashion/style blog but a blog that features fashion with an emphasis on design and the art form.

We’re not suggesting that every selfie be an homage to Andy Warhol or Bruce Weber but what if it was?  The proliferation of social media is evidence of our need to express ourselves and connect with others.  Why not put in the effort to go a step beyond the filter button to express your creativity?

At the very least we hope to inspire you to take the time to appreciate the wonders and beauty of art, nature, and great design that surrounds you daily.  (And the next time you’re wearing a great poofy skirt, why not take it for a spin? next level selfie.)
