Hey all! My short film for the Vidiocy Film Festival at the iO theater "HD" took third place the other night! The idea of the contest was to draw a suggestion from a hat and make a short in 30 days with the suggestion in mind. HD in best watched in HD, so flip that switch to 720p and I hope you enjoy.

HD features the improv talents of Brett Lyons and Andrew Newton

Music: Late Night Bikes by Capybara

All the shorts were fantastic. Chicago has some serious comedy film making power.

The Throw Back Short

So, that short I’m in (“Personal Day”) was great and won an award and reminded me of some of the shorts I made with writer/director Michael S. Duffey while I lived in Chicago. My friend Tony introduced us and I made around 5 or so with Duffey, mostly shot in and around his house. I loved working on them, loved Duffey’s writing and sensibility and was always so happy when he asked me to be in one. I keep waiting to see if Duffey’s making a feature. I know it’ll happen eventually.

Anyway, here’s a short called “Manners” that was made possibly 10 years ago, back when IO was doing a show caled Vidiocy where folks could pay $20, grab a suggestion and make a short movie based on that in 30 days. The suggestion was “Manners” and the short stars my old pals Lauren and Tony, who are both terrific actors and improvisors and if you see them, tell them I said hello and that I miss them.

I dunno, I’m starting to come around on this. The only real solution to New York’s rent crisis, (and it IS a crisis) Manhattan’s in particular, is to increase the inventory. To halve the rent you need twice as many apartments. That’s simple market economics. That means zoning, incentives, and taming community boards/NIMBYs. We need to tear down 6 story pre-war buildings and build 12-20 story apt complexes. The crucial thing is not all the construction can be high-end co-ops and condos. There needs to be medium and low-income housing incentive-ized into the development. You also can’t strip all rent control/stabilization away before the increased inventory impacts prices, or else you codify and make permanent Bloomberg’s Walled City of Privilege. That must not be allowed to happen as it’s antithetical to New York City’s character and American values. What can’t go on, is the strangling of New York’s middle class. A city has to be a balanced template of low, middle, and high income households or you have Dubai. Great for the Yunnies who visit and the financiers who rule but hell for the foreign nationals who make the city habitable. I have ZERO faith Mayor Bloomberg has the integrity or vision to make this transition, but it’s got to happen. NYC needs a housing boom, yesterday.

Loving these Austen adaptations. The Sanditon series suffered from being adapted from an unfinished work, but I already dig Alexis’ portrayal of Emma, just the right texture of smug and confident.
