"Korean Eyeliner" look with VDL

This 3rd look in the 4 part series is inspired in part by the strong eye makeup worn by Korean pop stars, in particular Goo Hara of pop girl-group Kara.

If you’re not familiar with this style of liquid eye-lining, it’s a dramatic liner look with similarities to the Japanese gyaru style (emphasizing the outer corners of the lower lash line to emphasize a slight droop), but the liner is stronger and more of a statement. I liken the 2 looks to “puppy” vs “kitty”.

Unlike the Japanese “puppy look” style which emphasizes roundness (and frequently makes use of false lashes and lid tape or lid glue to fake a wider-eyed dolly effect) the Korean style of “underlining” the eyes is more kittenish and sexy. It elongates the eye at the outer corners and is perfectly flattering for anyone with hooded lids.

My eyes are naturally upward tilting, so the effect isn’t as obvious on me, but try it for yourself!

VDL Products used:

  • Base: Lumilayer primer mixed with Perfect Lasting Foundation SPF25 (dewy skin is a must for any Korean-style makeup look!)
  • Highlighter/Blush: Festival Mineral Blusher in 102 Hand Holding (the ivory adds sheen to the nose bridge, cheekbones and browbones)
  • Brow pencil: Festival Brow pencil in Gray Brown
  • Sparkly bronze shadow: Festival Eye Shadow in 903 Sparkle Bronze
  • Matte cocoa shadow: Festival Eye Shadow in 207 Espresso (Tip: I use this with a flat brow brush to make out where the lower liner should go first; it’s easier to rub out mistakes before the actual liner goes on!)
  • Black pencil liner: Eye Bomb Auto Liner in 01 Bomb Black (Tip: For the lower lash line and covering the waterline, using a pencil is easier and safer than liquid liner)
  • Black liquid liner: Eye Bomb Tip Liner in BK1 Bomb Black (This thing is so long-lasting I had difficulties removing it even with my cleansing oil. Must-try for oily lids!)
  • Mascara: Eye Bomb mascara
  • Lip tint: Triple Shot Lip Tint in Triple Peach

Classic Edgy Smoky Eye Look with VDL

Part 2 of my VDL collaboration is centered around a very quick smoky eye using just a pencil, a shadow duo and mascara. The whole trick is in choosing the products with the right texture and playing with light for a contoured lid that glistens with a pop of silver every time you blink.

The key product here is Eye Bomb Mega Smoky Pencil, which is pigmented and smudgy enough for that sexy grungy look. On lazy days, you can actually just stop at step 2 and then finish with mascara. If you want to switch it up, try the same look using different eye shadow duos!

The skin is kept quite luminous and the cheeks and lips are a soft girly peachy-pink.

Products:

  • Base: Lumilayer Primer mixed with equal parts Perfecting Last Foundation
  • Setting Powder: If you have normal to dry skin, skip powder. If you have oilier skin, just use a tiny bit of Locking Pressed Powder around the T-zone where needed.
  • Peach Blush: Festival Mineral Blusher in 109 Fall In Love (I mixed both shades for a soft warm glow)
  • Brows: VDL Festival Brow Pencil in Gray Brown (this slant-cut automatic pencil is idiot-proof for drawing natural-looking strokes and needs no shaving)
  • Eye Primer: VDL Festival Eye Primer (if you have oily lids, a thin layer of this helps lock things in place; if you don’t, the black pencil is enough)
  • Black Pencil: Eye Bomb Mega Smoky Pencil
  • Silver/Grey Eyeshadow Duo: Festival Mineral Eyes in 901 NY. 34TH STREET
  • Mascara: Eye Bomb mascara
  • Peachy lipstick: Festival Lipstick in 608 Chris (this gorgeous lipstick goes on slightly more pink against the skin than it might appear in the tube.)

"Express Luminous Makeup" for Work/School using VDL products!

I’m collaborating with Korean cosmetic brand VDL to bring you a series of easy-to-do makeup looks ranging from the everyday face (in this post) to the more trendy and colorful!

If you’ve not heard, VDL is an up-and-coming brand that’s known for fun, intense color products and great base makeup, many of which make use of special color pigments in a layering technology to refract light and perfect the skintone.

There are currently counters and outlets in South Korea, Singapore, Vietnam and The Philippines. Here’s hoping they expand to more countries soon!

This is one super-quick makeup look that I wore last weekend, that looked polished and stayed put all day. The main focus is a radiant (but not shiny) complexion, clean winged eyes, soft barely-there glowing peach cheeks and low-maintenance, tinted lips.

Full-face image above was taken by the window in soft daylight without any special lights or flash, so the cheeks and lips come off a little more pink.

Products Used (plus tips and more info)

  • Primer: Lumilayer Primer (If you like things like High Beam and Strobe Cream but find them a bit too obvious, I highly recommend checking this out. It goes on under your base, and gives an ultra-fine and incredibly natural luminosity that lights up the skin without looking like you’re wearing any shimmer.)
  • Foundation: Perfecting Last Foundation SPF25 in 303 (this is medium coverage, so mix with a little Lumilayer Primer if you want less coverage!)
  • Concealer: Brightening Tone Concealer 201
  • Blush/Highlight: Festival Mineral Blusher in 602 Back Hug (soft peach and beige-gold split blush)
  • Peach shimmer shadow: Festival Shadow 602 Orangeade (wearable coppery orange)
  • Dark brown matte shadow: Festival Shadow 207 Espresso (matte chocolate brown)
  • Felt Tip Liner: Eye Bomb Mega Pen Liner (idiot-proof felt tip for those who are new to drawing flicks with liquid)
  • Black pencil liner for tightlining: Eye Bomb Auto Liner (smooth and long-wearing, so it can last quite well on the tightline)
  • Black mascara: Eye Bomb Mascara (a long-time favorite that lengthens, thickens and lifts. If you prefer waterproof formulas, try Water Bomb mascara.)
  • Sheer pinky-peach lipcolor: Triple Shot 601 Triple Peach (Favorite colored balms in the world. These come in 3 shades; pink, red, peach, but all of them go on more pink than they appear in the tube, and the milky colored strip actually helps to even out uneven lip tones better than other balm-sticks or sheer lipsticks.)

VDL COSMETICS: What the HECK is it???

Finally an affordable, fashion-forward Asian makeup brand that’s more edgy and performance-oriented than just girly and cute!

Most of you have probably never heard of VDL (Violet Dream Luminous) cosmetics before. It’s owned by Korean giant LG, better known throughout the world for electronics and appliances. Founded very recently in 2012, it’s targeted at the sophisticated modern woman who “lives big, dreams big, and dares to ask for more”.

The range is colorful, with smooth, modern textures and a range of shades from subtle (barely-there) to strong (matte red shadow). I’ll say it now; it bears more than a passing resemblance to MAC in terms of color range, and even some of the packaging, but best of all, it’s priced way lower than MAC for us here in Asia Pacific. Shockingly enough, a dupe outperformed the MAC (click swatch images above), and I’m very impressed with the quality of some of these shadows.

Many items in the line are dual-purpose, which is perfect for those of us who want it all and want it right now.
  • Brightening Concealer that fades dark spots as it conceals
  • Blush and Highlight duos that you can wear together or separately for subtle contouring
  • An interesting pressed powder puff that you can use normally (pat) or wield like a paddle brush (sweep)
  • A nifty little tinted balm that you can use to quickly create ombre lips!

I managed to get my greedy mitts on this colorful stash before launch at a blogger event (and found an exact MAC dupe in the process), but I’ll be popping down to the store soon as I was pretty impressed by the lightweight foundations and Brightening Concealer/Brush set. PLUS, I want to check if they brought some of the limited editions I see on their website to Singapore.

P.S. I’ll do tutorials with some of the products soon.

If you’re in Singapore, VDL opens at Suntec City Level 2 (#02-338/339 - nearer Esplanade station) on 29 June 2013.
