For the most part, the majority of remixes that come my way “turn up”, even the melodic, chill stuff. The beat is always faster, or somehow more buoyant, compared to the original. Once in awhile, something comes along that “turns down”, and it adds something quite special to the original. That happened with this remix of Banks’ Something New, by Southhampton producer New Mantra. He takes the haunting ballad and gives it a syrupy, hushed atmosphere. From the first notes of the remix, shivers are sent down my spine. Banks’ smoky vocals are never more melancholic and fragile. Sighs are not enough to express the beauty and heart wrenching sentiment on New Mantra’s vaporous remix.
