Here’s what one recently-exposed botnet, which gives certain sites (and their advertisers) the appearance of millions of hits in traffic, does when clicking on target sites and non-target sites. AdWeek has a great piece on these scummy sites that appear to be reliant on this botnet, one of which, USBuildingDigest.com has the magic ability to draw hundreds of thousands of hits on an ad-heavy two-hour old article on a relatively dry topic, despite the fact that their Twitter account has 128 followers. “It is difficult to imagine why one would run this type of botnet across a cluster of 202 sites, other than to commit display advertising fraud,” says Spider.io’s Douglas de Jager.
