So it keeps doing this dance between chilly and warm but cold rainy out, right? And you forgot that you cut your only pair of pants into cut-offs once summer hit, and now you’re feeling the repercussions of that decision. But don’t fret. LA COLLABORAZIONE WITH GUCCI COMES TO MIAMI BEACH

By Rafa Carvajal & Jesse Spencer

As I have mentioned in previous columns, I truly love art. So this week I bring to your attention the results of what started out as a concept idea between the famed fashion house family’s Uberto Gucci, his business partner Tatjana Labato, and Miami’s celebrated artist, Noel. This collaboration has led to an international artistic exchange that will premiere in a duo of events Thursday, November 17, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden, followed by a reception from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Raleigh Hotel.

With “La Collaborazione” Noel is taking his amazing artistic talents to a whole new level, so I had to catch up with him to learn more about it.

Can you explain “La Collaborazione” to Wire Magazine’s readers?

“La Collaborazione,” is a homage to the history of the Gucci family. With this collection of mixed media paintings I’m blending such iconic items as the original Gucci scarves and their leather and metal accessories with my work. The collection tells the story of how the Gucci family started in Florence with their first love and passion of all things equestrian, and how from there they evolved to their beautiful scarves. It is the first time that I’m using 3D objects on my work, and I must say that it was very exciting and the results are very unique. Uberto Gucci and I were very pleased when the first two pieces in the collection were unveiled in Florence in December of 2010 during my Mediterranean exhibits. With “La Collaborazione” I’m introducing new techniques and a more simplified execution that reflects my artistic growth and my own personal interpretation of merging the classical with the contemporary. There are even some obvious POP approaches in a couple of the pieces in the collection… well as POP as I can get!

How did your relationship with Uberto Gucci start?

Actually, it all started in a conversation between Mr. Uberto Gucci and Tatjana Labato, his U.S. business partner, when we met at my May 2010 Miami opening. Uberto and Tatjana liked my work from the start and, in a very organic way, it developed into a collaboration.

How did you find your inspiration for the “La Collaborazione” pieces?

That is the easiest part. To start, the Gucci Family roots and history are from one of my top favorite cities in the world, “Firenze”, which is the birthplace of The Renaissance and cradle to the most important masters of Italian art. To this you add the wonderful sense of design and creativity that is part of the Gucci family, and my theatrical background and creativity takes over!!!

Does Gucci give you a lot of direction or do you mostly have free reign?

Three words… total creative freedom! I have to say that in all my history of artistic collaborations, working with Uberto Gucci has been the most organic and fulfilling one ever. We have so much in common… from how we grew up in totally artistic and creative families to our artistic and personal preferences. In the past year all our Skype’s conferences (which had been several) go on for hours. We get so totally involved in the creative process that time truly flies by. It is a blessing when true artists get totally immersed in total creative. It is not work at all… it is simply living to the max!!!

Gucci thanks you for allowing him a fresh breath of pure air and letting his creativity be totally free. What does that mean in your eyes?

I believe that what Uberto means in this quote is how different it was to work in a collaboration where there are no limits to what can be done, patterns and creative directors to follow, and no compromising on what the collection or product needs to be.

Do you think you’ve started a trend? Can we expect to see other collaborations of iconic fashion designers and fine artists?

I only hope! That would be wonderful!!! There is no end or limits to creativity. I encourage artists of all mediums to throw themselves into all possibilities of creating something new and different works - after all, this is what makes you evolve and develop as an artist. We are the ones that have the power to take us as far as we want to!

What does it mean to you to have so much support from the GLBT community?

There are truly no words to describe this feeling, it is just like having your family always be there for you, and for this I’m eternally thankful. I find it very interesting that when it comes to the image that the world has of Miami Beach/Miami, having a very tight and powerful community is not one at the top of the list. Our community is by far one of the tightest and most together I’ve seen, as far as I’m concerned. It is too bad that the world doesn’t get to experience this to the fullest.

How do you feel about receiving a Proclamation recognizing your continuing contributions to Miami Beach?

This is an accomplishment that means the world to me. There is no better feeling than when your community recognizes one’s efforts and dedication. The act of giving is a gift on its own - one that my family taught me by example. It is the most wonderful human action and its biggest rewards takes place on its execution. The other special part to this is receiving this proclamation from our re-elected and wonderful Mayor Matti Bower, a person that I’m extremely thankful to and proud to have as a major supporter of my work since day one and a very special friend. Congrats Matti!!!

Is there anything else you’d like to say to Wire Magazine’s readers?

Yes, I hope that all Wire readers get the opportunity to experience “La Collaborazione”, but if you don’t get to attend the opening on November 17th, please feel free to contact me for private viewings. I also want to tell your readers to keep supporting our first Miami Beach magazine!!! Thank you so much Wire for always being there for me since day one (circa 1990), as well as for our community.

A book is a fragile creature, it suffers the wear of time, it suffers rodents, the elements, clumsy hands. If for a hundred and a hundred years everyone had been able freely to handle our codices, the majority of them would no longer exist. So the librarian protects them not only against makind but also against nature, and devotes his life to this war with the forces of oblivion, the enemy of truth.
—  The Name of the Rose, by Umberto Eco
