Trends | African Tribal Design

We often tend to reflect on largely western designs that lend their origins to the various European nations and their individual design styles, or look to the East for exotic and captivating ideas. It’s time to put the African land, it’s captivating prints, artifacts and designs under the spotlight.

The key to pulling off the safari look without making your home feel like a noisy zoo is restraint. The appropriate Room composition is integral factor. Typically in traditional African homes, the spaces are kept minimal to allow air to circulate in the humid climate, so don’t overcrowd the furniture. Similarly, don’t go overboard with accessories, and be sure to balance your accent items throughout the space. Finally, balance patterns and solids to create a room that breathes and feels uncluttered.

  • Colours & Texture - Deep colours combined with earthy tones reminiscent of the Savanna, paired with accent colors like burnt oranges, rust reds, and greens carry an added benefit of warming the atmosphere of any room. Don’t be afraid to mix tactile textural elements like wood, leather and rattan.
  • Decor - You can really play with unique artefacts when choosing to decorate influenced by african culture. Displaying statement african inspired jewellery, artwork, handcrafted masks, clusters or wooden figures and animal print detailing all possess great aesthetic properties when it comes to achieving an authentic outcome in this style.

So, I logged onto Netflix, as one does, and saw this:

Is AoS really trending right now? Did something happen? Did a Marvel exec bribe someone over at Netflix? Or did Netflix look at me and my viewing habits and think ‘better make her feel normal- let’s just say everyone is watching that show about those cute little science nerds’???

Why China is in love with ‪#‎Us‬ today

The term “我们”, translated as "Us”, has become a rage on social media in China after actor Li Chen confirmed his relationship with starlet Fan Bingbing on Friday, posting a picture captioned “我们”.

Fan promptly reposted the selfie on her Weibo page, confirming the relationship to her legion of fans.

While the duo might have expected the congratulatory messages they received, what they perhaps had not contemplated was that #us would become a top trend, sparking some rather heartwarming posts.

As of Friday evening, posts using #us had been clicked over 200 million times.

Even the UN got in on the action, posting pictures of Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and his wife on its official Weibo account.

Some netizens also shared pictures of Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan.

Another image that was widely appreciated was a photograph posted by the Chinese peacekeeping force on its Weibo account, showing one of its members holding a little child after a rescue mission.

Meanwhile, a post that got many talking was by the man known as Brother Orange, who gained online fame earlier this year after netizens had tracked him down as the owner of the American Buzzfeed editor Matt Stopera’s lost iPhone.

“This is us. The old times that we can never go back to,” wrote Brother Orange posting a picture of himself with Stopera.
