Hey Loves! :)

May 1st is quickly approaching so I’ve been doing a lot of research about some Green Smoothie information that might come in handy for anyone who wants to join in on the challenge with me.

It would be awesome if you guys tagged along on this journey to health and wellbeing and share your experiences with everyone. Remember, every experience you go through could be valuable to someone else just by sharing it with them.

So here is some of the information that I’ve been able to gather because of personal questions that I’ve been trying to find answers to and I figure we are all alike, so the information I post below could make your journey that much easier.

All this information was gathered from around fifteen different Green Smoothie themed sites and I’m so grateful that I came across all of them because they all lent me loads of useful information that I want to share with you all.

So first off, here are some Green Smoothie Facts:

  • Green Smoothies are made from a mixture of fresh fruits and raw green leafy vegetables blended together into a thick & smooth liquid.
  • They are great for people who lack greens in their diets, i.e. people who have a harder time consuming them in their leafy form.
  • They are quick to prepare, super healthy for you and very easy to drink. They are also a great way to add more greens into your diet and they taste lovely.
  • Green Smoothies improve your health and aids with weight loss or weight management. It is something that can easily turn into a healthy habit (something your day will become incomplete without.)
  • Green smoothies have the power to heal, they can sustain you throughout your day and they provide nutrients that are very essential to your health.
  • They reduce cravings for unhealthy foods and they increase your energy levels.
  • They are clean and very eco friendly.
  • The possibilities of what you can put into your Green Smoothie are endless but and ideal ratio to start with would be: 60% fresh fruit + 40% raw leafy greens. You can plan around with the ratios once your digestive system has gotten more acquainted with eating raw. :)

Here is a list of the Best Greens to try for your Smoothies:

  • Spinach
  • Any type of Lettuce
  • Kale
  • Chard
  • Basil / Parsley / Cilantro & other herbs you like
  • Bok Choy
  • Celery
  • Cucumber

Others you might want to try:

  • Beet Tops
  • Strawberry Leaves
  • Celery Leaves
  • Kang-kong Leaves (my most recent discovery hehe)
  • Malunggay Leaves

Best Fruits to put into your Green Smoothies:

Note: ** It is always best to use fresh, local fruits in season. **

*** By best I mean that they contain more soluble fibre for easier blending and they make the smoothies turn out creamier, sweeter and it masks the taste of the greens better. ***

  • Banana
  • Mango
  • Fresh Peaches
  • Pineapple
  • Strawberries & other Berries
  • Pears
  • Kiwi
  • Oranges
  • Papaya
  • Grapes w/ their seeds (yes, w/ their seeds! Lots of nutrients in them! )

High Protein Foods you can add to your Green Smoothies:

  • Nuts
  • Seeds
  • Quinoa
  • Oats
  • Sprouted Seeds or Beans
  • Tofu

Order in which you should add Ingredients to your Blender:

  1. Liquids
  2. Fruits
  3. Greens
  4. Add-ons / Boosters

Note: ** You can blend for up to 5-10 minutes or until you’ve achieved your desired consistency and before the liquid becomes warm. **

Green Smoothie Tips & Advice:

  1. It is best to consume your Green Smoothie on an empty stomach or after consuming fruit only.
  2. Fruits & Vegetables oxidize when they are blended and broken down so basically they start to lose a lot of their nutrition so it’s best to consume your smoothie as soon as you can or right after blending.
  3. Studies have shown that the body absorbs the Calcium from greens a lot more easily than from cow’s milk.
  4. Fresh Fruits and Greens are the best source of Fibre and Green Smoothies first thing in the morning will help with do wonders for your digestion.
  5. The benefit of Green Smoothies over Juicing is that the food is in its whole form including fibre from the pulp, skin, etc. which is absolutely essential and beneficial for the health.
  6. It’s good to drink at least one Green Smoothie everyday. You will notice amazing changes in your health while finding yourself craving for less junk and looking for more healthy foods to eat.
  7. The best time to drink your Green Smoothie is in the morning because you have more of an empty stomach so it will digest faster, your body will absorb more of the nutrients & this will cause less digestive upset, if any.
  8. Your can drink your Green Smoothie at any time of the day. You can have it for Breakfast, for Lunch or for Dinner or you can drink it all throughout the day just make sure it is sealed well to keep fresh for longer.
  9. A great time to drink a Green Smoothie is right after a Workout or Exercise Regimen. It ill fuel your body up with water, the sodium in the greens and the nutrients & calories in the fruits.
  10. It is best not to consume anything 40 minutes before of 40 minutes after drinking your Green Smoothie to get the most nutritional benefits out of each.
  11. Don’t put too much into your smoothie. Mix just enough ingredients to maximize the nutritional benefits and to keep it easy on the digestive system.
  12. Rotate your greens so that you don’t accumulate the same type of alkaloids from consuming the same green over and over again.
  13. Choose organic and locally grown produce as often as possible because they do not contain pesticides or other toxic chemicals and they provide superior nutrition.
  14. Greens are full of Chlorophyll straight from the sun which is very cleansing for the blood and makes you smell nicer! :)

Starchy Vegetables Not to add to your Green Smoothies:

Note: ** These combine poorly with fruit and may cause gas. **

  • Broccoli Stems
  • Zucchini
  • Cauliflower
  • Cabbage
  • Brussel Sprouts
  • Eggplant
  • Pumpkin
  • Squash
  • Okra
  • Peas
  • Corn
  • Green Beans

Now, Here are the Benefits of Green Smoothies:

  1. They are extremely nutritious for you.
  2. They are easy to digest. Absorption starts in the mouth.
  3. "Consuming Chlorophyll is like receiving a healthy blood transfusion.”
  4. Greatly reduces the amount of oils and salt from your diet.
  5. Helps you feel calm and peaceful because of the Chlorophyll that delivers oxygen to the cells and puts your body at a slightly alkaline state for optimal health and so cancer cells do not thrive.
  6. A Healthy Body = A Happy Body so they basically make you feel happy for no reason! :)
  7. You adopt a more positive  outlook on life. Green Smoothies help you grow in capacity to handle things better because your body is now constructed with newer, better materials.
  8. Helps with getting rid of unnecessary addictions.
  9. Gives you beautiful, radiant and glowing skin.
  10. Gives you smoother bowels. (Thank goodness for this! )
  11. Energy, energy & more energy!!!
  12. Helps release unwanted weight, wastes & toxins from the body.

I hope you found some of this information helpful and I hope it motivates you to join me come May 1st! I can’t wait! :)

The Green Smoothie Experience So Far...

May 1st is almost here, and all those lovely individuals who took on the Green Smoothie Challenge last April are now 3 days away from the finish line. Though I’ll bet most if not all of them aren’t going to stop because they’ve already established a healthy daily habit that they will most definitely continue because the benefits are undeniable and you feel them almost immediately.

I haven’t even started with the personal challenge I set to begin on May 1st but since my “breaking-in” I’ve already experience a handful of benefits that makes me understand why so many have made a lifestyle out of these lovely Green Smoothies.

I started having one Green Smoothie daily since around March 18th. This is when I officially started all my experimenting.

Since then, here are some of the Observations I’ve made:

  1. My cravings for unhealthy foods has gone down significantly and I find myself craving for healthy foods like vegetables and fruits. (I watched a movie with my partner yesterday and I bought a pack of pre-cut Honey Dew Melon for us to snack on during the movie. I personally thought that was great and it made me really happy.)
  2. I’ve been drinking a lot less coffee and a lot more tea. For some reason, I feel the need to drink more water and keep hydrated. I’ve noticed that I HAVE to finish my glass of water. And because I know that coffee can dehydrate you. I’ve been consciously having less of it. Don’t get me wrong, I adore coffee but lately it has become less necessary.
  3. My energy levels are higher and I stay full for longer. If I have a Green Smoothie for breakfast(6:30 am), I can go all the way till lunch (12 noon) without craving or snacking. Also, I’ve been sleeping a lot earlier and the sleep has been good. :)
  4. My skin feels and looks better. I started noticing this most in the last couple of days. Lately my skin has a healthier tone/color to it which I suspect comes from the raw powers of all the beautiful vegetables. A good friend of mine commented on it yesterday as well so I guess it isn’t just my imagination. She plans to join me this May 1 too!
  5. Easier movement. Since starting I’ve noticed a significant improvement in my digestions. I’ve been able to move easier daily and to me this is very important. It has normalized and the relief feels wonderful.
  6. There is this all-around desire to live a healthier lifestyle. Not that I  was not already into it before, but I suddenly have this need to support healthier things like eco-friendly / organic products, use herbal personal care products more, remove meat from my diet and live by natural healing. (Yesterday, my partner and I were shopping for a gift for his month and I made sure I got her something practical, locally made and organic. Paul got his mom a healing crystal bracelet. :))
  7. I simply feel happier and healthier. No joke. And I just want to infect everyone with this happy, healthy bug! hehe

I’m telling you, these Green Smoothies are amazing and in 3 days I am going full force. I can’t wait to document everyday and share the experience with you. Hit me up if you want to join in! We can trade recipes and tips and observations and all the other lovely things that come with these Green concoctions.

I’m so excited! :)

This is a photo of a Green Smoothie I made for Aym, my really good friend since pre-school. She wanted to see what it was all about and her comment after trying it was “Smoothielicious! ;)”

  • Spinach
  • Red Beets
  • Cucmber w/ the skin on
  • Papaya
  • Frozen Banana
  • half a cup of whole milk
  • 1 packet of Stevia Natural Sweetener

Green Smoothies: Interlacing Forces

When creating a Green Smoothie we are mixing and matching fresh fruits and raw vegetables, each having a specific power, nutritional value, benefit, and function. At the end of the day, the process of selecting ingredients for your smoothie becomes an intertwining and interlacing process where you have complete control of what you can get out of your concoctions.

No two Green Smoothies will ever come out exactly alike. Every one of them is unique even if you use the exact same ingredients in the exact same measurements because these ingredients are living just like you and I and therefore they are constantly evolving in quality, flavor  intensity and texture. The only thing that stays constant in these Raw & Living edibles is their nutritional value and the benefits we can gain from them. You are a like a chemist combining all the elements you need to eventually come up with the ultimate cure for every possible discomfort you can think of.

Always remember: When you are making your Green Smoothie, you are not just making some drink that replaces a meal, you are creating something very powerful and very good for you. Something that could save lives if enough thought and dedication is put into the practice. The best place to start would be getting to know the fresh fruits, raw vegetables, proteins and boosters you plan to use in your magical drinks.

Here are a few food facts that might be helpful for you to start with:

Making Green Smoothies = Making Super Foods. Like I said these green colored concoctions are a blend of very powerful ingredients that can help rejuvenate, heal and nourish you.

Another thing I love about making Green Smoothies is that you hardly waste any parts of the fruits and vegetables you use because most of the parts you remove when you cook them instead, can be left in unnoticed in your smoothie.

You can consume about 1.5 L of your Green Smoothie per day, but I would suggest making them in batches or making two or three different kinds in the day if you want to be consuming that much because it is best to consume your Green Smoothie as soon as you can (within an hour of making it.) Also I would suggest working your way up to the 1.5L about 2 cups per day at a time so as not to give your body too much of a shocker.

A good ratio to follow would be 60-70% raw vegetables: 30-40% fresh fruits + your proteins + your boosters. Like I said, the possibilities are endless so experiment until you get your perfect mixture and have fun! J

Here’s a list of fresh fruits and raw vegetables you can start mixing & matching as well:

Star Thoughts. 042213

We are all energy in the form of magicians, mathematicians, healers, wizards and so on with capacities beyond comprehension, beyond bounds.

Seeds on the verge of profound growth, nourishing and feeding off of every other force we so purposely yet unconsciously encounter.

In our minds we think we are pressed for time when in actuality, time is of no matter.

Walking through reality and swimming through dreams, trying to grasp extremities, clinging on to every snippet, every liquid memory quickly seeping through the fingers of our fragile recollections.

The truth is, our dreams and the realities we create are one and the same.

Our minds have just become masters of deception so we need to learn how to decipher.

There is profundity in every verge of everything that exists. Everything is on the verge of something perceived impossible.

Infinite potential waiting to explode and be revealed.

Stay sensitive and aware and open so that nothing is lost in the periphery. This is where the real wonders live. Guiding us ever so slightly but without a doubt into our selves.

Incredible, impossible heights await your precious soul. Dive into the infinite ocean of truth and love waiting ever so patiently for your arrival.

There, you will find your self. And everything wil be as it should be

Be calm. Breathe. Everything already awaits you, you amazing being made of stars.

Take Care of Your Self

Here are a few things I’ve been thinking about lately. In my opinion, most of us get very caught up in the toxicity of the city or work or relationships that we forget about what’s really important, the Self.

In reality, all change can only really begin from within. You have to start within your self and then you will be able to effectively cause positive changes around you or at least help the positive shift happen.

Inner reformation is a conscious effort that needs to be made and it all starts with falling in love with your Self. This self love begins in the mind and flows out to everything around you. With the mind, anything is possible.

When you are able to take care of your Self, this love and this care spills over to everything that surrounds you and radiates through the whole universe.

Here is a list I came up with, a list of ways to Take Care of Your Self:

  1. Keep it Simple. Don’t over complicate things. Don’t over think.
  2. Learn something new every day. When you don’t know something, research. All the resources you need are all readily available to you.
  3. Respect your body. Listen to it. Get to know it. You will be amazed at how incredibly amazing it can be.
  4. Make an effort to be patient. There is no need to rush. Everything is Perfect Timing.
  5. Challenge your Self. Expand your limits. You are limitless.
  6. Move & circulate with good intentions only. Act with no ill thoughts or motives towards others. Remember Karma.
  7. Allow your Self to do things differently. Rid your Self of redundancy and stagnation. Try new things. Watch your Self grow.
  8. Be honest. Simply. There is never any need to be otherwise.
  9. Be sensitive. Never judge.
  10. Listen. The universe is always sending us messages that will lead us in the right direction. Stay open and everything will be revealed to you.
  11. Cut the fat. Get rid of anything you do not need in your life. These things only weigh you down.
  12. Live in the moment. now is all you have. Now is all that matters.
  13. Love your Self. You are an amazing human being with amazing power and potential. Realize this and everything is possible.

Love from here. Peace be with you.

The other evening I invited two of my really close friends, Indigo and Al to the house because I wanted to do some stretching. I just felt this need to Stretch.

Al is quite the expert and practices daily so he is a perfect demonstrator for what the stretch positions are supposed to look like. I also love his beautiful choice of words for explaining why things should be done a certain way. He is an amazing teacher.

Much like my twin, Paul. They are both fantastic martial artists and these are two people I know who have learned and almost perfected the art of calm. Something I hope to achieve one day.

The type of stretching we did sort of went like a cycle where in each movement flowed into the next but each stretch very distinct with a unique purpose and a specific target.

As we were going through each motion and holding each stretch, I felt intense pains. I could really feel my muscles attempting to reach their ultimate limits but I still pushed myself to the farthest I could go.

When we were through I felt really good. My body felt warm and sore, but the good kind of sore.

The kind of soreness that makes you feel alive. The kind that makes you want to stretch a little further, a little closer. The kind that keeps you coming back for more.

Our capacities are limitless. There is no limit to how far we can go. That’s why evolution never stops and it’s almost impossible, no matter how hard we try, to prevent our beings from growing closer and closer to our selves. The state where we have unlocked our inner powers and magic. Finding the peace and love that we never had to look too far to find. Simply because it was already always within and around us.

My plan is to do these stretching exercises as often as I can, daily even. Because I believe the benefits are amazing and the experience would go perfectly with the Green Smoothie Challenge I’m going to begin this May 1st.

I really can’t wait. Lucky for me Indigo & Al live just a walk away so creating a daily habit out of this is very feasible. The universe is so good.

To you reading this, love from here.

Day 10/30: Green Smoothie Challenge

Hello, lovely!

Today is Day 10! I hope you’re doing good today. It’s evening and I just finished having the 10th smoothie for my personal Green Smoothie Challenge.

Today was really nice. My partner came down south to have home-cooked lunch with me at the park, then we visited two good friends to have some Greek coffee, smoke some Sheesha and share good conversation. We also walked around a bit and I was able to find a Mother’s Day gift for my mom.

It also rained today. With beautiful lightning striking and thunder crashing. It’s been so hot lately, we were all grateful for the wonderful gift of rain. It was a beautiful day all around and I feel very blessed.

I’m also feeling really good. I’ve reached Day 10 deviation free which is a big deal for me so I am proud I’ve come this far and I feel like from here it’s just going to be all breezy.

For my 10th Green Smoothie I used up all the remaining Spinach & Celery from my grocery trip this week and I added one new ingredient that I’ve lately become very fond of. Tumeric! This one came out really nice and refreshing. It filled my up nicely and now I’m ready to just chill and have a shower and get some good sleep. :)

Smoothie # 10 Ingredients:

  • Spinach
  • Celery stalks and leaves
  • Silken Tofu
  • Ripe Yellow Mango
  • Fresh Organic Turmeric

Day 4/30: Green Smoothie Challenge

Hello dear! I hope you are feeling healthy and happy. :)

I’m four days into my personal Green Smoothie Challenge and I am feeling really good and proud that I’ve been able to get through four whole days without flinching. Writing these daily posts is really helping to keep me motivated and on track and it’s something I look forward to doing everyday aside from consuming the wonderful Green concoctions.

For my 4th day I wanted to use a citrus fruit and since I knew I didn’t have any at home I asked Sab, one of my lovely workmates if she was up for trading her Sunkist Orange for my Fuji Apple & she was down. Such a darling. So thanks to her, my plan for the citrus Green Smoothie happened. :)

Here are the Ingredients I used:

I had this one for dinner and it filled me up. The Kankong leaves make the texture of the smoothie really nice and thick which I love. This one turned out nice and refreshing and definitely fulfilled my citrus fruit craving.

'Till tomorrow! Love from here.

Day 3/30: Green Smoothie Challenge

Hello! I hope you are well! :) Today is my third day into my personal Green Smoothie Challenge and so far so good.

It’s been a breeze and definitely something I look forward to every morning upon waking up. So far I’ve been having my Green Smoothies for breakfast or for dinner since I learned that it’s best to drink your Green Smoothie on an empty stomach for optimum absorption.

Today I had my Green Smoothie for breakfast. I kept it nice and simple for this one but before I tell you which ingredients I used I wanna share with you a couple of conscious efforts I’ve decided to make:

Yesterday, I went for lunch with some family and a couple of friends and after lunch. My good friend Indigo and I were left at the table and after noticing the glasses of water on the table I told her: “We should startmake a conscious effort to finish every glass of water that is given to us.” She agreed it was a good idea.

I notice that I always leave glasses of water left unfinished so I’ve decided to change that for a number of reasons: (1) Water is great for you. It is so healthy with countless health benefits if you drink enough of it everyday. It keeps you hydrated and it regulates body temperature. (2) Why waste perfectly good water? So much of it is wasted already so drinking that last bit in your glass would be good for you plus none of the water goes to waste which I think is great.

The second conscious effort I’m making is using more organic products that do not support animal testing. The other day I was walking around the mall and I came by an all-organic store with locally made products. I was in there for a while and saw loads of things made from all natural ingredients and I felt this need to support this lifestyle. I bought myself some organic bath soap and deodorant. I plan to go back there today to get the other personal care products I need.

Another reason I’m doing this is because the other day I was scrolling down my tumblr dashboard and saw a photo of a bunny that was being used for animal testing at a Loreal lab and it broke my heart. The poor thing was full of bald spots and you could just see this really sickly sad look on its face. Terrible. So after getting through these products that I have on me at the moment I will be using organic, herbal, all natural products that do not support animal testing.

If you guys want to join me on these two conscious efforts, feel free! :)

So back to my Day 3 Green Smoothie… Here are the ingredients I used:

  • Bok Choy
  • Parsley
  • Silken Tofu
  • Ripe Yellow Mango
  • Stevia
  • Water

Healing Properties of Parsley:

  • Helps prevent Cancer
  • Rich with an arsenal of antioxidants
  • Contains Anti-inflammatory properties
  • Boosts the Immune System
  • Helps keep your heart healthy
  • Loaded w/ Vitamin K which is good for your bones & your nervous system

So far, I’ve been feeling great and well adjusted. I hope all of you are feeling the same. I’m excited to try a new green concoction tomorrow. :)

Love from here.

Yogurt, my love.

Since starting the Cohen Program last 11/11/11, my love for yogurt has grown so much it got to a point where I would get excited to go to sleep because I knew that there was some beautiful low-fat yogurt waiting in the fridge to be had for breakfast with some yummy fibrous fruit. I’ve literally had yogurt for either breakfast or dinner for since 11/11/11. I love it so much and that’s why I’f like to share it with you.

I know that I’ve been posting most of my Green Smoothie recipes with silken tofu as the main protein but low fat Greek or Natural Yogurt is another awesome option for a protein source in your smoothies. It makes satisfies sweet tooth cravings and it also makes a healthy substitute for ice cream. You can even make a smoothie with yogurt and freeze it overnight and have it like ice cream for breakfast or a snack.

Yogurt is also super good for you and there are a bunch of benefits you can get out of consuming more of this beautiful, creamy, and healthy food. Here are some of the benefits of yogurt I gathered from my own personal knowledge and some very insightful websites so you guys get the full scoop. :)

Benefits of Yogurt:

  • Provides the body with good bacteria or probiotics which are good for the digestive and immune systems and have many health benefits. Probiotics = “for life”
  • Rich in Calcium for bone support, Vitamin B-2 & B-12. Potassium & Magnesium
  • Wonderful source of protein therefore it is ideal for breakfast because it keeps your energy up and keeps you full for longer.
  • Helps lessen the risk of Osteoporosis, High Blood Pressure, and gastrointestinal conditions.
  • Helps with you hair, skin and nail health as well.

Tips for Choosing & Using your Yogurt:

  • It’s always best to go for a low-fat or fat free yogurt. (for obvious reasons)
  • Choose a good sweetener if you find that your fruit does not provide enough sweetness (Stevia Natural Sweetener is my personal preference)
  • Yogurts with “live” or active cultures and probiotics are very good for you.
  • Mix fibrous fruits into your yogurt for extra nutrients and to fill you up more.
  • You may turn your yogurt into a smoothie by mixing it with fruits and spices of your choice. Freeze it if you want a healthier substitute for ice cream.

Here is what a typical breakfast or dinner of mine looks like. I love having my yogurt with papaya, yellow mango or really ripe green mango. :)

So now that I’ve expressed my love for this lovely creation. You guys might want to try it out! It really is wonderful for you.

*** Cohen Note ***

  • If you are doing the Cohen Lifestyle Program, only mix your yogurt with fruit and your choice of spices (C-lium Fibre for extra thickness and texture)
  • Never mix your yogurt with vegetables.

Here is one simple Yogurt Smoothie Recipe you guys might want to try out:

Orange-Cinnamon Lassi

  • Low fat Yogurt
  • 1 whole Tangerine Orange
  • 2 dashes of Cinnamon
  • 1 packet Stevia Natural Sweetener
  • Ice cubes

As I’ve still been breaking into the Green Smoothie lifestyle, I’ve still been trying different leafy green and seasonal fresh fruit mixtures. But don’t worry, you will still be seeing loads of me. hehe :)

So here are the Ingredients I used:

  • Kangkong
