One Step Forward and Two Steps Back for St. Patrick’s Day Parade

One Step Forward and Two Steps Back for St. Patrick’s Day Parade #LGBT #equality

Last spring, St. Patrick’s Day festivities across the country were fraught with controversy, as many event and parade organizers made it clear that LGBT people were not welcome. However, discriminatory bans were lifted earlier this month in New York, much to the happiness of LGBT groups and allies. “New York’s storied St. Patrick’s Day Parade will end its long-standing ban on gay groups, GLAAD…

Here is one for the LGBT community!

Organizers of the St. Patrick’s day parade in New York City, have lifted a ban  on openly gay groups who wish to participate in the event.  The ban has been a major source of contention between LGBT groups and the conservative Catholic Archdiocese of New York which handles the religious event in honor of its patron saint.

Cardinal Dolan Affirms ‘Confidence’ in St. Patrick’s Day Parade After Gay Marchers Allowed

In a statement released Wednesday, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York, says neither he nor his predecessors have ever told the St. Patrick’s Day parade organizers who could or could not march.

This was in response to the controversy that broke when parade organizers announced that after more than two decades of blocking them, parade organizers would allow an LGBT group to march at…

10 Adorable St. Patrick's Day Snacks For Kids

Get the best Diet Tips at Diet Nutrition Advisor

I’ve a distinct memory of being provided green bagels as a St. Patrick’s day treat in primary school. Environment-friendly bagels! Can you believe it? I was frightened. Even as a whimsical little babe, I knew bagels shouldn’t be that color. It’s the kind of color that indicates a food is tainted, rotting or filled with too many chemicals.

Some green foods are tasty like cruciferous vegetables, pesto and avocado. Even some that are unnaturally colored are okay, like candy and mint flavored treats. On the other hand, some foods need to not under any situations be green. Bagels, for instance, don’t need to be viridescent. Couldn’t they’ve thrown us scallion cream cheese and informed us it was 4 leaf clover taste?

It’s possible to be festive without overdoing it with the color scheming, I promise!

Here are 10 charming St. Patrick’s day snacks for kids that’ll not make them think you are them food that went bad:

A Belated St. Patrick's Day Greeting

A Belated St. Patrick’s Day Greeting

Hello, friends!

Pussy Willows! In Urlingford, Co. Kilkenny

We made it to Portugal and back in one piece. Actually, even better than one piece (if that’s possible). We flew out last Friday (the 7th) and returned to Ireland after nine blissful, sunshiney days touring the country with our backpacks and baby in tow. We flew back to Ireland the day before St. Patrick’s Day for obvious reasons – I…

Cup Song in Irish or Gaelic or Gaeilge

My Shamrock-Filled Weekend

This past weekend was filled with green, beer, friends, and food. It was St. Patrick’s Day on Monday, meaning that the entire weekend was just one big reason to don poor Irish accents and drink a lot. No complaints there, right?

Saturday kicked off with Johnny’s 5 Mile Runnin’ of the Green. I’ve realized that lately I run races that involve heavy drinking/eating afterwards, but oh well. Better…

St. Patrick's Day Recipes

St. Patrick’s Day Recipes, the festive feast in the Night Owl Kitchen!

Dublin Coddle

Sweet Irish Soda Bread

Chocolate Irish Car Bomb Cake

(that’s what it’s called, no joke)

I did take a few liberties in my baked goods. There were two changes I made to the Dublin Coddle, 1) I slow cooked in the crock pot and 2) I added a flour and water roux to help thicken the liquid. That helped make it more stew like and my Dad wants me to make it more often hehe! For the…

Despite the hubbub I still went out for my yearly dose of infinite green, countless freckles, and charming red hair. The Central Park area was most happening with crowds of people drinking right out of the bottle as they watched the parade. It was a really friendly event, even the police were chatting it up. I noticed one cop talking to a bunch of (underage) kids who were drinking along the sidelines. He did not reprimand them for the alcohol. It was absolutely freezing cold, so I can’t understand why several of them started taking off their shirts. At that point, I decided to go in for a beer. I bought a can of Heineken and walked down against the parade for several blocks. The police did not bother me as I walked. This felt like a first for New York. It was more like London, where one can easily drink a pint while having a stroll.

Here is an article in the Daily Beast that describes the ban as grotesque. It did not really bother me. I think that the Irish, and the church in general probably have enough bad gay controversy. I imagine they would avoid the limelight. You can see some photos from the day below. Best part was pints in Connolly’s and a taste of some live music.

Cheers to St. Patrick’s Day 2014 Despite the hubbub I still went out for my yearly dose of infinite green, countless freckles, and charming red hair.

A Bitterly Late St. Patrick’s Day and Bitterizing Quotes Part 2

Yeah, nobody else get’s why we have a holiday for you. Or more importantly why we don’t get the day off.

In case you forgot, yesterday was St. Patrick’s day (and I think you know why some people forget St. Patrick’s Day…).  I think most people are foggy about the reason why we celebrate it, but I’m more foggy on why we don’t get the day off.  I may not be Irish, but I do like gold, making fun of…

Happy Saint Patty's Day!

Happy Saint Patty’s Day!

We ate corn beef and cabbage, Lila busted out mad river dancing moves, and we even managed to make some green cupcakes. The only thing that was lacking was the actual beer itself…but I can bet you that I will make up for that. We are two days away from the 1st day of Spring, although we’ve had what feels like the 1st official day of summer. Hopefully we can experience more spring-like weather…

St. Patrick's Day Hangover Cures for Adults

Unpopular American opinion: I could care less about St. Patrick’s Day.

In fact,  I was never really into St. Patrick’s Day. In elementary school, I suppose it was an excuse to wear green and possibly get those goldchocolate coins that Leprechauns give out (is that how it works?) As a college student, I was into it in the sense that I liked hanging out with my friends and avoiding all work as much…
