“Hello”, I am back with our Wednesday W O W (WORD OF WISDOM) and it is
Fashion 2.0 (Adjective) : weaving of Fashion with digital media;
For example, Best Instagram award 2015 goes to Opening Ceremony as this year’s Fashion 2.0 awards; Best E-Commerce experience award 2015 goes to NET – A – PORTER; Best wearable tech 2015, Tory Burch for Fitbit;
Best wearable Tech – Fitbit bracelet by TORY BURCH
Many of my clients turn to Pinterest, Instagram, and beauty blogs for makeup inspiration. This is perfectly acceptable and I even encourage them to do so (I have many Pinterest boards devoted to different kinds of makeup and am very active on there). The problem is when those inspirational photos become the standard or the expectation. Makeup artists work with colors to enhance features that their clients already have. If a client has severe acne, even the best makeup artist will not be able to camouflage the texture of the skin. I have had several clients ask me to use airbrush makeup to cover up their acne. Airbrush makeup should not be confused with the airbrushing technique in Photoshop and it seems there are many clients that make that mistake. Airbrush makeup is a thin, light to medium coverage foundation. It can be used on its own, for someone looking to even out skin tone and achieve moderate coverage. I find that airbrushed foundation looks best on skin that is already quite clear and in good condition (not too dry or oily).
Because of fashion magazines, Instagram filters, and all the technological advances in Photoshop techniques, many clients are led to believe that makeup alone will transform them into the images they see in the media. The truth is that not even the models and celebrities look like that, even after they’ve spent hours with a professional makeup artist, hairstylist and photographer. The final step for all of these images is high-end retouching. The skin is smoothed, all blemishes are removed, eyes are brightened, teeth are whitened, skin tone is evened out, dark circles have been removed, and stray hairs have been cleaned up.
So many of my clients have asked me if I could make their wrinkles smaller, if I could cover under their eyes more, if I was sure I couldn’t make that pimple disappear, “why don’t the colors look like the photo?” and “ It looks different on me.” It wasn’t that they didn’t like the makeup. If they had photographed and edited it I guarantee it would have been blog-worthy. But what we see in a mirror is not our cameraphone image.
Our obsession with becoming plastic and “Instagram-filtered” is not a celebration of artistry. It is the perpetuation of an unrealistic standard of beauty, discomfort with our own identity and body image, and a shameful everyday acceptance of how much we dislike the skin we’re in. I love a beautiful image but I don’t like the expectations it places on my clients and myself, to cater to an unrealistic standard.
When getting your makeup professionally done, please remember that your makeup artist can only alter your features slightly. If you have acne, your makeup artist can neutralize the redness but the texture cannot be covered without layers upon layers of product (I actually refuse to do this). Please also consider your own face when showing inspiration photos to your makeup artist. If you have very pale skin and light hair, your makeup will not make you look like the Mediterranean model with the tanned skin and dark features. Many clients wonder why, when I am finished doing their makeup, it doesn’t look like the photo and this is because they are bringing photos of models and celebrities who look nothing like them (completely different skin tone, nationality, bone structure, etc.).
Makeup should be about individuality. Please don’t try to transform yourself into something you’re not.
