their latest release, “Hitchhiker.”
I understand many of you think SM ENT was always known for producing “factory” style “perfect” idols, but in reality?
HOT’s Warrior Descent
HOT’s Wolf & Sheep
SES’ Dreams Come True
Shinhwa’s Twinkling of Paradise
BoA’s ID; Peace B
Take a look at these old school MVs. THESE are what SM started from - WHAT THEY GAINED THEIR IMMENSE POPULARITY ON.
Think Hitchhiker is strange? Take a look at SES’s Dream Come True.
SM only recently started with the grooming of “perfect” idols. This is because SM does a good job of really representing/voicing the desires of the upcoming generation; BoA’s ID; Peace B is an example - the lyrics are about the internet & the criticisms the youth faced at the time in relation to it.
This generation (of Koreans) and the next are about living up to the high expectations of vanity & image. Sure it’s not the best standards to live by, BUT THEY EXIST NONE THE LESS. SM represents this generation with their “barbie” idols, just like they did for the 90’s rebellious/internet culture with the idols you see above. All very extreme, but accurate.
Hitchhiker does that for the wave of EDM crazy kids in Korea. It is a depiction of a culture that really isn’t being represented/expressed by other companies.
So instead of going WTF, look at the past and see just how much SM constantly changes to represent the generations to come. Sure YG/JYP/ETC produces great artists, but they didn’t start with the representation of Korean youth that SM founded itself on.
SM letting Hitchhiker do his thing in a way that represents a certain culture/generation? WHY IS THAT A BAD THING?
