Yesterday I attended a friend’s Birthday Tea. Coincidently it was also the Jewish holiday Simchat Torah. Simchat Torah is a celebration marking the conclusion of the annual cycle of public Torah readings, and the beginning of a new cycle. We sat under her Sukkah, which requires three walls and a roof made of plant material, like palm leaves or bamboo. The plant material allows them to see the stars to remind them of the 40 years spent in the deserts after the Exodus from slavery in Egypt.
