“It’s like weightlifting: When you practice during Sha’bān and the other months, it is like lifting much heavier weight. But when Ramadān comes, the devils are chained and the burden is lightened, making it much easier to lift the same weight, and even increase your maximum capacity!

Starting this process as early as possible will give you ample time to plan, prepare and practice, so you can have the most awesome Ramadān ever!”

He who fasts one day in the month of Rajab, firmly believing in the cause, Allah (swt) will place between him and the fires of hell twenty trenches. Each trench has a width of that between the heavens and the earth.

Hadith translated by your brother

Throughout the months of Rajab and Shaban, we have prepared ourselves mentally, physically, and spiritually for the month of Ramadhan. However, when Ramadhan approaches, we then further prepare ourselves for the blessed Laylatul Qadr, or night of destiny. Such is a night incomparable to any other night in the year, greater than one-thousand months or the equivalent of 83 years. It is a night in which the Holy Quran was revealed and a night in which our destinies will be determined for the next year. It is a night in which Allah swt has put the opportunity to reach nearness to Him at our doorstep.

In the Holy Quran, in Surah Qadr, Allah swt says, “Surely We revealed it (the Holy Quran) on the grand night. And what will make you comprehend what the grand night is? The grand night is better than a thousand months. The angels and Gabriel descend in it by the permission of their Lord for every affair, Peace! It is till the break of the morning.” (97:1-5) But how is it that one night is greater than essentially one lifespan? What makes this night so grand?

In Arabic, the meaning of the word Qadr literally means destiny. On this night, our fate for the following year is decreed. In the Holy Quran, Allah swt says, “We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against Evil). In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom.” (44:3-4) Our sustenance, fortune and misfortune, our health, spiritual elevation, and even natural occurrences are determined on this night. Imam Sadiq (as) is narrated to have said that the 19th night is the night when our destiny is written, the 21st night is when it’s prepared, and on the 23rd night it’s signed and sealed. In these nights, an upper and lower bound for our destiny is set, but it is up to us to determine which we will attain.

Thus the grandeur of this night lies not only in the ascension of the Quran, angels, but the mercy of the Lord at our fingertips and the potential for us to reach nearness to Allah swt. Knowing the grandeur of this night, we must strive to prepare ourselves physically, mentally, and spiritually such that we do not lose out on such a unique and invaluable opportunity to better ourselves. When the Prophet (s) was asked how one could enjoy the favors and good grace of proximity to the mercy of Allah swt, he recited the supplication of Prophet Musa (as):

“Oh My God, I seek proximity to You; He (Allah) said: Proximity to Me is for him who stays awake on Laylatul Qadr.

Oh My God, I am in need of Your Mercy; He said: My Mercy is for him who shows mercy to the poor on Laylatul Qadr.

Oh My God, I am in need of the passport to cross the bridge; He said: that is for him who give alms on Laylatul Qadr.

Oh My God, I am in need of the trees in Paradise and their fruits; He said: that is for him who seeks forgiveness on Laylatul Qadr.

Oh My God, I seek deliverance from fire; He said: that is for him who remembers Allah on Laylatul Qadr.

Oh My God, I seek Your good pleasure; He said: that is for him who says a two rakat prayer on Laylatul Qadr.”

Let us stay awake on this night and strive with our every being to gain nearness to Allah swt. Let us strive to restructure our thoughts and priorities in this life such that they are aligned with what Allah swt is pleased with. If we can take advantage of this one night, and potentially change our lives for the better in the upcoming year, then we have achieved a success that is innumerable by any measure.

Making the Most of Shabaan (Good Deeds series)

The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “Allah said: ‘Every deed of the son of Adam (AS) is for him except fasting; it is for Me and I shall reward for it…” (1)

1. Fast every Monday & Thursday.
Prophet (SAW) said: “Deeds are shown (to Allah) on Mondays and Thursdays, and I like my deeds to be shown when I am fasting.” (2)

2. Fast the 13th 14th & 15th.
Prophet (SAW) said: “Fasting three days of each month is fasting for a lifetime, and ayaam al-beed are the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth.” (3)

3. Fast as the fast of Prophet Dawood (AS).
Prophet (SAW) said: “The best fasting is the fast of Dawood (AS): he used to fast one day and not the next.” (4)

4. Fast as much as you can.
Prophet (SAW) said, “That is a month to which people do not pay attention, between Rajab and Ramadan, and it is a month in which deeds are lifted up to the Lord of the Worlds. I like for my deeds to be lifted up when I am fasting.” (5)

5. Make-up your missed fasts (if any).
Due to sickness, menses, being neglectful, being unaware about making up fast.

6. Sisters make up your missed fast from last Ramadan.
Aa’ishah (RA) who said: “I used to have fasts that I still owed from Ramadan, and I could not make them up until Shabaan.” (6)

Fasting in Shabaan

It has been reported from Imām Ja'far ibn Muhammad al-Sādiq (A.S.) that on the commencement of this month,

Imām ‘Alī ibn Al-Husayn  Zayn al-‘Ābidīn

would gather his companions and address them,

“O my companions, do you know which month this is? It is the month of Sha'abān about which the Holy Messenger (s.a.w.w.) used to say that it is dedicated to him. So keep fasts during this month in the love of your Holy Prophet (s.a.w.w.) and to attain closeness to your Creator. By Allāh in whose hands is my soul, I have heard from my father,  Husayn ibn ‘Alī  (a.s.), that he had heard from  Amīr al-Mu'minīn (a.s.), that whoever keeps fast during Sha’baan in the love of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.w) and to attain closeness to Allāh  will become a friend to Allāh  and on the Day of Judgment will be close to  Allāh  by His grace and Paradise will be assured to him.”

“Therefore, stay awake this night in prayer and worship and encourage your Ummah to also keep awake this night in order to get closer to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) through their actions since this is a noble night. This is a night in which not a single person supplicates to Allah except that his prayers are accepted. Nobody asks for a single thing on this night except that it will be given to him. No one asks Allah for forgiveness except that his sins are wiped out. No one turns in repentance to Allah except that He accepts their repentance. Whoever is deprived of the goodness of this night has definitely been deprived of something great.”

.. My Lord, I have wasted my life committing the crime of forgetting You and played havoc with my youth, intoxicated with keeping myself away from You.
—  The Invocation (Munajat) of Sha'baan

Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim

Holy days and nights. They are coming. We must take accounting. And if we are aware of how we were yesterday, the day before, last year, how we are today, how we want to be in one month, three months, one year down the road, that time, we have a vision. That time we are preparing for the biggest thing that is going to happen. Because every day we are training ourselves, and to watch our self.

Sha'ban The Month of Muhammad Rasulullah SAW

The Holy Prophet said:  “Shaa’-baan is my month”.

Beberapa amalan populer yang dianjurkan antara lain;

Singling Out The 15th Of Shabaan For Giving Sadaqah (Voluntary Charity) - The Permanent Committee for Islaamic Research and Fataawa

Singling Out The 15th Of Shabaan For Giving Sadaqah (Voluntary Charity) – The Permanent Committee for Islaamic Research and Fataawa

The Permanent Committee for Islaamic Research and Fataawa said, “To specify the giving of sadaqah (voluntary charity) on the night of the 15th of Sha’baan every year is an innovation…it is not permissible.

It is befitting you give this sadaqah (voluntary charity) without specifying the night of the 15th of Sha’baan, rather do so every year and in whichever month, but without particularising any…

O Believers, we must show honour to this month. We must show honour to this days. We must take these days and night seriously. We must run to erase our wrong actions and intentions from our books before they are carried to be inspected to the Heavenly stations. We must run to fill our books with good deeds and intentions. We must increase our zikr, our reading of the Quran, our Salawats, our fasting, our worshipping, and our istighfar.

We must sit and think and judge ourselves and make strong intentions to leave these wrong things that we are doing. We must turn to our Lord Allah swt and ask for forgiveness in these days, sincerely.

O our Lord, Ya Rabbal Alameen, we are hoping and begging for Your forgiveness. We are hoping and begging for a clean Bara’at. We are hoping and begging for a clean strong year, a year of coming closer to You. To be open for us in the night of Bara’at for the sake of Your beloved one Sayyidina Muhammad (asws).

Amin, Amin, Amin.
