I bet you are thinking: “Hey! look! Its another person posting a bunch of soppy songs”
Well, asshole, you are wrong. These are like, fucking awesome songs. So get over yourself, you mong.
Yeah baby, KISS I started with KISS. You know this is going to be awesome. Forever, co-written with Michael Bolton. Is a classic, its proper last dance music. Its classic power ballad material and frankly the fact that it is not the ’Universal Anthem for Romance’ is beyond me. Just listen, it puts a massive smile on your face, you can sing along, you can air guitar. Its impossible to hate Forever, and if you do, its probably because you are a soulless automaton.
Also, just because you have to mention it. Boom, Beth with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Beth, Forever, Shandi, KISS are just great at love songs.
My favourite KISS love song has to be: Love Her All I Can though. Its just great. I love it. It reminds me of how I feel about the One I Love.
Anthrax: Safe Home
I did a feature on WCFYA a while ago, and I talked about this song there. This song is a lesson in why love songs don’t have to be sweet and saccharine. Its a declaration of love. Its how great love can feel. Cos, lets be honest. It does give you strength and it makes me do the patented 'Scott Ian Thrashy Jumpy Guitar Dance'. I identify with this song, and i don’t just think thats what makes it great. Its a modern classic. Its a howl of longing, a cry for affirmation and belonging. Its that sick realization in the bottom of your stomach when you look into that persons eyes. Listen to Safe Home and feel it.
Plus, the guitar solo kicks ass…
If this song were sung by some overblown diva or elder statesman of pop, everyone would be freaking out over it. But its not, its Dave Mustaine, and apparently he’s not middle of the road enough for everyone to like, even though he is alongside Dylan in terms of his lyrical intelligence and as talented as Taupin/John in terms of songwriting ability.
Promises, is fucking enormous. Its King Dave. ‘The World Needs a Hero’ is a conflicted album, but this and ‘Dread & The Fugitive Mind’ are great pieces of music.
Listen to it, it will get stuck in your head. Lush strings, a great solo, awe-inspiring chorus and the mid-section constantly blows my mind. Its operatic in its enormity. Dave gets some stick, but he is a great songwriter and balladeer, see also: 'A Tout Le Monde'
Ramones: Baby, I love you!
All I have to say is: JUST LISTEN TO IT. Thats it really, with The Ramones, just listen to it. BILU, is just elegantly simple. I picked this over, ‘I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend’, well because its better, and its more universal.
Foo Fighters: Everlong
I know, I know. Putting this on, makes me feel like Barry is about to say this to me: (in High Fidelity)
Barry: Oh, that’s not obvious enough Ryan. How about the Beatles? Or fucking… fucking Beethoven? Side one, Track one of the Fifth Symphony… How can someone with no interest in music own a record store?
But its true. I love this song, anyone who’s been around me, will know that ‘The Colour & The Shape’ is my favourite album of all time. Everlong is on it. I love Everlong, who doesn’t its amazing. Its a great album, the lyrics to that song are beautiful. I’d also rate this song as another Foo’s love song classic:
Foo Fighters: Generator
I’m the Generator, firing whenever you quit
Yeah whatever it is, you go out and it’s on
Yeah can’t you hear my motored heart
You’re the one that started it
Not, the biggest song off of TNLTL, but its beautiful, its a great pop song and a great love song.
Laura, I’m doing these songs for you. I hope you’ve realised it by now…. I love you. This is like, our fifth valentines day together. And whilst, I don’t care too much for the cards and ‘Wet Wet Wet’. It’s another reminder of how much I love you. I really do.
PS. This is my favourite Foo Fighters song ever: Hey, Johnny Park.
This next song, is probably the best love song of all time. I do not under-fucking state that. It is the king of love songs. It was written by Dr. Love himself and passed down by Cupid to one man, and that man’s name is James Alan Hetfield. He wrote it as a doodle and it grew into an emotional masterpiece the likes of which the world has ever seen. Its had bromance tributes and many cover versions. Any version of it, is great. I’ve gone for the version off the incredible S&M album. I can pretty much guarantee that even though all the metalheads who went were saying “fucking hell, Puppets is gonna sound awesome”, they were thinking, “how fucking beautiful is Nothing Else Matters going to be”
Nothing Else Matters is a rare song. Its timeless, its without boundaries. It is why Metallica are better than U2 or The Rolling Stones, its why Metallica are THE BAND of the past 50 years. No other band can collide with your ears and have such emotional resonance. From Nothing Else Matter’s poetic balladry, where Hetfield communes with his Inner-Lynott and transcends to another plane of songwriting, to ‘Master Of Puppets, One & The Four Horsemen’ where they show that Heavy Metal is definitely the most interesting and inspiring form of music in existence. Metallica are awesome and Nothing Else Matters is beautiful. Thats a fact.
Listen to it, Let it swallow you whole…
