2010 Arnold Strongman Classic http://dlvr.it/7wJVp1 2010 Arnold Strongman Classic Another Strongman title for USA! See some action photos at the bottom of this page! The 2010 Arnold Strongman Classic saw a repeat champion as DEREK POUNDSTONE of USA dramatically and brilliantly retained his title. It was a down to the wire battle with Poundstone finally holding off the former multiple champion Zydrunas Savickas of Lithuania. It was a titanic battle between two powerhouses of the sport. Includes the award by Arnold Schwarzenegger to a jubilant (and newly engaged) Poundstone. This DVD is a “must have” for all fans of Strongman Contests, and fans of these amazing strongmen and their incredible feats of power and strength. Timber Lift - In this event, also known as the Farmer’s Carry, contestants lift 865 lbs. of barn timbers bolted together. They have 30 sec. to carry the 865 lbs load up a 32 ft. inclined ramp. 2. Manhood Stones - Contestants lift round stones weighing up to 525 pounds over a bar approximately 48 inches high. 3. Apollon’s Wheel -This unique barbell was made famous by turn-of-the-century strongman Louis “Apollon” Uni. The barbell resembles two train wheels welded (weights do not rotate) to a thick bar (1.92 inches in diameter) for a total weight of 366 lbs. Contestants will lift the wheels from the floor to overhead as many times as possible in two minutes. 4. Tire Deadlift - Contestants will lift a specially designed 14 foot long bar weighted with tires. Each tire weighs approx. 100 lbs, and the beginning weight will be approx. 750 lbs. 5. The Circus Dumbell - Contestants will lift a replica of a “Circus” dumbbell, which were used by professional Strongmen from the early 20th century. The dumbbell weighs 202 lbs. and has a very big handle which is 3 inches in diameter. The men will use one hand at a time and lift the dumbbell overhead as many times as possible in 90 sec. The above description courtesy of the Arnoldclassic.com web site. Format: Widescreen 16:9 This year, in addition to the Arnold Strongman Classic’s traditional tests of total body strength, there was an entirely new feature for the crowds at the Arnold Fitness EXPO. This new feature, “Mighty Mitts,” was sponsored by MHP, and it did not involve the Arnold Strongman competitors. Instead, it showcase ten men who are world-famous for the strength of their hands. The Grip Giants who have been selected to take part in this event are the very best in the world. It will be an extra attraction for fans of Strongman contests as well as for aficionados of “grip feats.” These men faced four challenges with $1,000 per event on offer. In our Extra Scenes we have included the 2 most visually exciting events, The Jowett Anvil and Sorin’s Monster. These challenges took place on the Expo Stage before and after the Strongman events. The Mighty Mitts Challenges we included in the DVD for 2010 were these 2 strength feats: 1. THE JOWETT ANVIL. In the early years of the 20th century, George F. Jowett was a very prominent figure in the physical culture world as a writer, lifter, strongman and promoter. One of the stunts for which he is most famous featured a large blacksmith’s anvil, which he supposedly gripped by the horn with one hand, swung up to his shoulder, flipped so that he caught it upside down in his hand, and then pressed over his head. Jowett claimed to be the only man who could do this feat. However, leading strength historians are in agreement that Jowett, who was also famous for his exaggerations, never made such a lift. In any case, Jowett’s own anvil will be used in the challenge. It weighs approximately 163 pounds and will be placed on the platform with its horn pointing upward. The challenge will be to simply grasp it by the horn with either hand, lift it off the ground and walk/run as far as possible forth and back across the front part of the 50’ stage within 30 seconds. The prize-money ($1000) will go to the man who carries it the greatest distance. Only chalk will be allowed for this challenge and for all others. 2. SORIN’S MONSTER. Richard Sorin, founder and owner of the Sorinex Equipment Company and himself one of the legends of hand strength, will provide a huge, circus-type barbell weighing approximately 500 pounds and featuring a bar two inches in diameter; this bar will not rotate within the spheres in any way. The challenge will be to deadlift the bar for as many repetitions as possible within 30 seconds using a double-overhand (pronated) grip. Sumo and traditional deadlifting styles are both permitted and the bell may be “hitched” on the way up as long as the lifter is standing straight at the end of the lift. The barbell will have to touch the platform on every rep after the referee has given the “Down” signal, and a “hook grip” will not be allowed. A contestant may put the barbell down between reps if he likes, or he may simply touch the platform before making another attempt to deadlift it. If no one deadlifts the Monster, the prize-money will be given to the man who pulls the bar the greatest distance off the platform, and if more than one person makes at least one successful lift and there is a tie in the number of reps the prize-money will be split. The 10 competitors in no particular order were: 1. Rich Williams 2. Mark Felix 3. Steve Gardener 4. Wade Gillingham 5. Odd Haugen 6. Tex Henderson 7. Andrew Durniat 8. Jedd Johnson 9. Chad Woodall 10. Sergeii Romanchuk Rich Williams won all 3 events. None of the competitors in the 2010 Mighty Mitts competition were able to lift the Mark Henry bell out of the box. Jim Lorimer refers to the Arnold Sports Festival as “Strength Heaven,” and the introduction of these unprecedented grip challenges has added a new attraction as well as a new dimension to the festival - an attraction which should stimulate strong men everywhere to push back the boundaries of hand strength. 2009 Arnold Strongman Classic http://dlvr.it/7vY3xl 2009 Arnold Strongman Classic A great title for USA! The 2009 Arnold Strongman Classic saw only the third new champion crowned since its inception in 2002. This year the honors went to Connecticut police officer and World’s Strongest Man runner-up, Derek Poundstone, who improved on his second placing in the 2008 Arnold Strongman event. It was a see-saw contest with the six time Russian National Weightlifting champion, Mikhail Koklyaev, and Poundstone separated by a solitary point at the end of the final event. Poundstone’s incredible world record of 15 successful circus dumbell lifts sealed the title over the mighty Russian. Strongman royalty were also present as judges, officials and MCs. These included Magnus Ver Magnusson, Bill Kazmaier, Žydrunas Savickas, Mark Henry, Odd Haugen and David Webster O.B.E. 2008 Arnold Strongman Classic http://dlvr.it/7qB3SM 2008 Arnold Strongman Classic Zydrunas Savickas of Lithuania triumphs again for # 6! See Zydrunas Savickas of Lithuania as he wins two events beating an international field of 10 champions to capture the 7th Annual Arnold Strongman Classic title. He was the sensational winner for the sixth year in a row. You could say that he owns this event now! Overall there were 12 world records set throughout the competition. Savickas set three of them. In the Tire Deadlift he lifted 1,027 lbs. In the Circus Dumbbell he tied with Derek Poundstone for the world record with nine lifts each. In the Manhood Stones he lifted 525 lbs. three times. Savickas had won the Arnold Strongman Classic for the previous 5 years and started as the red hot favourite. He is generally considered to be the Strongest Man in the World, at 6’3” and over 400 pounds, the man is a giant of strength. Asked his exact weight this year he said that was classified information! Finishing second was Derek Poundstone of USA. This was a sensational effort beating USA’s World Strongest Man winner Phil Pfister and many other highly credentialed Strongmen. West Virginia’s Phil Pfister won the prestigious “World’s Strongest Man” competition in 2006 to become the first American to win the title since Bill Kazmaier won in 1982. Pfister, a hulking 6-foot-6, 350-pound former firefighter from Charleston, West Virginia is always one of the most popular Strongmen at the Arnold Strongman Classic. It was an injury that caused World’s Strongest Man winner Vasyl Virastyuk to finish in 10th position. This DVD was shot with multiple cameras. Our special thanks to Live Technologies, Inc. Head Judge was David Webster. The 6 lifts were as follows and shown in this order: - Timber Lift - The Circus Dumbell - Tire Lift - Manhood Stones - The Heavy Yoke - Apollon’s Wheel RESULTS: 1.
