Would you have believed that two wooden panels could deliver the funkiest ride there is? We did, and we dubbed it the Sandwichbike. A Dutch Design original that was inspired by the concept of flat packing, home assembly and our never-ending drive to create exceptional products. Now it is time to share it with the world.
Rethinking the cycle
To enable you to build it yourself, we had to rethink every aspect of the classic velocipede. We came up with a concept that is unlike anything out there. Instead of a welded frame, we engineered a ‘sandwich’ of two weather coated frames of layered plywood. Bonded together by ‘smart cylinders’, the frames and components become a rock-solid piece of technology that is both durable and extremely attractive.
1. Who is behind “Sandwichbikes”?
The Sandwichbike is designed by Dutch designer Basten Leijh, of Bleijh Industrial Design.
2. How did your idea come up?
Basten has many years of experience in designing bikes for several large brands. The Sandwichbike originated from the idea to re-examine the materials, manufacturing and distribution of bicycles. Much in the same way furniture or other wooden products can be flat packed and easily transported, the Sandwichbike is designed to fit in a small package. Using wooden panels instead of a welded frame the Sandwichbike allows the use of advanced printing and cutting techniques, making the bike extremely customizable. Consisting of less than fifty parts, the Sandwichbike can be assembled by anyone, while getting to know more about the technology and materials involved in this bike. We believe this creates a more meaningful relation between the bike and its owner, an essential development in a world full of disposable products.
3. How is your workshop and organisation?
The Sandwichbike Headquarters houses four employees, making sure the design, production and service are top notch. As a small team we work together in the same way we communicate with our costumers: direct, personal and honest.
4. Any future project?
As mentioned, the materials used in the Sandwichbike allow for many customizing options. At the moment we are working on the release of the first Sandwichbike, but we also look ahead. Future plans include children’s sized Sandwichbikes, custom models, colors and prints, so keep an eye on our website for the latest news from the Sandwichbike family!
