Joss Whedon's Trasgender Incident of 2014 - Final Thoughts

So, it’s been over 48 hours since Joss Whedon, hero to many geeks, made his now ‘infamous’ post about strong female characters not having a ‘peeny/balls’.  Which you can read about in our original post here:

And it’s not that… anyone really, went on the attack immediately.  At first me and my fellows, and the podcast all tweeted back asking for clarification, or an apology, or whatever, so did a thousand others.  Got no response.  Even got people tweeting to us, saying to wait, and we did, but still nothing.  A day later Joss Whedon tweets some cryptic response about George and having to “finish the hate”.  We here, and countless others were confused, and yet, we were still waiting and hoping for an apology or clarification of some kind.  Still nothing.  We watched as twitter, and tumblr went on and on in conversations and reblogs about the sitch.  Which yesterday, some bloggers decided to call ‘Whedongate’.  While I would have held onto Whedongate for something else, I suppose it works.  But still, some of us waited, and hoped.  Perhaps his PR guys were prepping something for him.  I mean, this situation alone proves he’s got a lot of transgender fans and trans supporters among those who ‘liked’ him.  But no.  Today, just a little bit ago, he goes ahead and retweets Dan Savage… yep Dan ‘the ally who never liked trans peeps all that much’ Savage.  On an article about how people get upset when you devalue them, blah blah, feminism, blah blah twitter, blah blah.  You can go read it, it’s here:

So yeah… fun.  We, of course, don’t know if Joss purposely chose the most transphobic Gay Inc guy he could find for this, or if he just thought that the lgbt liked Savage, and maybe this would make sense to the masses as something of a ”not gonna apologize for people getting their feelings hurt, because that’s what happens to overly sensitive people” response.  That’s what it feels like.  He’s not saying he’s sorry, or clarifying, or anything.  He’s wanting us to get over it.  The hashtag ‘irony’ seems appropriate when retweeting Dan Savage on anything to do with… well, anything.  Especially as some mask of bullshit over a trans* issue.  And it’s not like Joss has tweeted anything else… at all really, except some random “unfollow me if you think I’d seriously use the word ‘peeny’ ” post.  Not since ‘Whedongate’ started.

Some have made videos about it:

Some have made music about it:

Some have written about it:

And io9 saying ’ Really Joss Whedon? Really?

Well, I’m done.  Personally.  Our co-podcaster Mona here at TT posted that her heart had broken into a million pieces at hearing this news.  Both Tibby and Amber agree.  As do thousands of fans that just wanted clarification that it was a joke, or to know if he really meant it, or to hear the words ‘I’m sorry.’  None of which, it seems, are coming.  But that hasn’t stopped the twitter.  Even Autumn Sandeen, transgender activist, and one of the first openly transgender military peeps ever to make herself known has tweeted him.  Gail Simone, current writer of Batgirl and all around awesome geek chick said ‘oh Joss, Dang it. NO’.  To which we have to agree.  And thousands of others.  Though, not everyone see’s it as offensive.  Some, obviously, are defending him too.  But the tweets to Joss Whedon over his trans comments continue.

But… what can you do?  Nothing.  Joss made his stance known at this point.  Perhaps days from now, or something, he’ll say he’s sorry… or clarify… or something.  Maybe.  But, there doesn’t seem to be any hope of that at this point.

Have you ever wondered where fairytales go once they’re created?

It’s been eight years since Story Sparks last had a dream. Now they’re
back, tormenting her as nightmares she can’t remember upon waking. The
black waters of Lake Sandeen, where her Uncle Peter disappeared decades
before, may hold the secret to Story’s hidden memories, or a truth she’d
rather not know. On a bright summer afternoon, Story and her two best
friends, Elliott and Adam, take a hike to the lake, where they dive into
the cool water and never reemerge. What they find is beyond anything
they’ve ever imagined could be possible, a world where dangers lurk in the
form of Big Bad Wolves, living Nightmares and meddlesome witches and gods.

Now Story must remember who she really is and somehow stop two worlds from
ultimate annihilation, all while trying not to be too distracted by the
inexplicable pull she feels toward a certain dark-eyed traveler who seems
to have secrets of his own. The fates of the worlds

are counting on her.

fantasy and delving into the paranormal. When KM is not busy writing her
next novel, she is the editor-in-chief of a blog covering the media
industry, as well as an editor with Booktrope Publishing. She has a
master’s degree in journalism from Syracuse University and a bachelor’s
degree in English-Lit from Nazareth College of Rochester. KM lives in
Upstate New York’s Finger Lakes region with her husband and her extremely
energetic little boy. Fractured Dream is her first novel.
