some academic thoughts on the independence of the Dominican Republic:

"The island eventually bifurcated into two contiguous colonial sites, a Spanish domain in the east and a French one in the west.

The Dominican Republic, which came into being as an independent nation-state in 1844 by delinking from Haiti, which had unified the island under its rule 22 years earlier, broke the pattern of the typical independence movements in the region.

Unlike them, which usually achieved independence by separating from European colonial powers, the Dominican Republic attained selfhood by dissolving its ties to a former colony, a nation founded by ex-slaves.”

Black Dominicans interrogated the ideology of the independence movement…(!!!)

Not every Dominican is an immigrant. The United States does not always mean “abroad”. It is home. When I think of “Dominicans”, I think of Washington Heights, but we are nostalgic, always wanting to return “home”. The Dominican Republic is the ancestral homeland.

A set of images for the working stiff. I know what it feels like getting ready to spend the entire day somewhere you hate, and then repeating the process five days out of your week. It’s tough and quitting isn’t always an option. Keep your passion in your heart for the day that you are given the opportunity to pursue it. Don’t give up on yourself and understand that the cycle can be broken. Maybe not today or next month, but It can change at the most unexpected of times. Always be prepared.

"Do something you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life."

Had a picture ready for today, but my dads been on my mind a lot. When that happens, I tend to shuffle through the same old photos I have of us, which sadly is only a few. This picture’s very important to me.

Parents, be careful, your children are fragile. You are their everything. Be there for them. Be consistent with your love.

Children, remember your parents are only human. They’ll make plenty of mistakes. More importantly, remember that when they are gone you will grieve. Love them, learn who they were, who they are and who they hope to become. We are all a work in progress.

I loved my dad. I miss him now that I’m old enough to understand that he was just as human as me. Not taking the time to know him is the single regret I have thus far into my life. He’ll never see his beautiful granddaughter grow up, and that breaks my heart. I don’t know if he was a great man, or a good man. I don’t know what kind of man he was. I just know that I miss him and it hurts. R.I.P dad.

P.S. Mom and Dad, I know you had know idea social media would be invented and this photo would be posted for all to see, but mannnn, coulda changed a lil niggas diaper before hittin the shutter button! I hope that nugget had a lil shit on it dad. Eat a niggas chicken nuggets but can’t relieve me of that 10lb dookie in my shorts… SMH at ya’ll  -_-
