Happy Mardi Gras.

President Gordon B. Hinckley (then Elder Hinckley) with his arm around Ruffin Bridgeforth, the first President of the Genesis Group, formed in 1971. Soon after the 1978 revelation he became the first black man to be ordained a high priest.

Pres. Hinckley described him as:

“a man of faith, a man who was close to his people and loved them and counseled them and blessed them and helped them with their struggles, their problems, their questions, their outward reach as they served in the Church. He stands as a great pioneer in this day when we honor pioneers.”

As a co-founder of the legendary Rebirth Brass Band and as a renowned solo artist, much ink has been spilled on the work of the New Orleans-based trumpeter and vocalist Kermit Ruffins – and for good reason, as Ruffins has been extremely prolific throughout the years. His latest effort, #imsoneworleans,  which is slated for an April 21 release through Basin Street Records is reportedly deeply influenced by the music and culture of his beloved hometown – and has the carefree, let the good times roll attitude that has been the trumpeter and vocalist’s trademark for the past 30 years.  Featuring a collection of covers and original compositions, the album also marks the first time Ruffins is backed by The Barbecue Swingers for the first time in over a decade.

The album’s first single “Put Your Right Forward” is a breezily upbeat, energetically funky composition based around a loose, almost playful 12 bar blues arrangement, comprised of keyboards, bass, drums, trumpet (in particular, Ruffins silky trumpet playing) and vocals. The song makes me think of summer barbecues with the extended family – and picturing the old-timers doing an old school two step to the song.

Of course Ruffins will be on tour to support the album and the tour will include a May 29 stop at Brooklyn Bowl. Be on the lookout for a good time.

Tour du France

France is known for cycling, hosting the famous – and now infamous – Tour du France bike race each summer. In 1968 Peugeot jumped on board the notion of a Tour du France and promoted a trip by vélometeur (or moped) through various departments of the country. One section, pictured in this poster by American graphic designer Seymour Chwast, features a man on a Peugeot BB3 (an under-50cc scooter with the appearance of a motorcycle and safety of a bicycle) traversing the Canal du Centre in Saône-et-Loire.

Chwast (born 1931) stands as one of the most influential graphic artists of the twentieth century, recognized for his playful and expressive approach to design that broke with the tradition of Swiss formalism. Chwast studied illustration and graphic design at New York’s Cooper Union before co-founding the celebrated Push Pin Studios with fellow graduates Milton Glaser, Edward Sorel, and Reynold Ruffins in 1954. Chwast believed concept to be as important to design as illustration and irony and humor percolated his commercial work. He used visual tricks and puns to play on images and words, effortlessly manipulating the everyday into the unexpected with subtlety and acuity.[1]

Chwast’s poster for Peugeot’s tour through Saône-et-Loire ironically used the title balade sauvage entre les deux mers (a wild ride between two seas) to describe a trip that would be anything but ‘wild’ in the ‘uncultivated’ and ‘uninhabited’ sense of the word; rather, it may be wild in the ‘enthusiastic’ meaning of the word. The Canal du Centre is a 70-mile canal with 61 locks that connect waterways stretching from the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea and it meanders past colorful towns, flourishing vineyards, grazing cattle, and old industrial monuments. Chwast visually plays with the diagonal blue strip in the poster interpreting it as being both a waterway and a cycle-way and thereby implying the leisurely cruising speed of the Peugeot BB3. La virée superbe!

The Push Pin Graphic #85 (1980) “Luck” / Available at / Push Pin Studios is a graphic design and illustration studio formed in New York City in 1954. Cooper Union graduates Milton Glaser, Seymour Chwast, Reynold Ruffins, and Edward Sorel founded the studio. In 1955, Push Pin Studios started a freeform publication which was sent to friends and clients. In 1976, the Push Pin Graphic changed its format to a bimonthly—continuing publication until 1981. A limited number of copies from that period are still available. Featured articles and fiction, edited by Ken Robbins, supported the theme for each issue. The Graphic was art directed and designed by Seymour Chwast. His illustrations appeared as well as the work of other award-winning illustrators represented by Push Pin. #graphicdesign #typography #PushPinGraphic #magazine #SeymourChwast #illustration
