I stumbled upon the work of Ron Mueck about two or three years ago and I’m still captivated by it. When I was painting on a daily basis he was one of my main inspirations, since I mainly focused on portraiture.

His story is an interesting one, starting as a puppeteer (he was also the voice of Ludo in the Labyrinth). He eventually got in to hyperrealist human sculptures, which have made him insanely popular in the UK (where he’s based- most notably for his show Big Baby). He’s known for making extremely large or small scale work.

His pieces remind me of a physical version of John Currin’s paintings…although the two can’t be compared coming from two different planes of genius. I’ve always had a fascination with the human form. It’s vulnerability, it’s flaws, it’s beauty…all intriguing and repugnant. I would love to see one of his shows in person. Must check it out next time I’m in the UK…
