26 years ago today - Michael was completely heartbroken. Want to know why? Keep reading and hit the link.
Please Note: This rant will only be referring to how the “Bad” Album was recognised - or rather not - by the Grammys.
As Tom O’Neil rightly says it, here’s proof that Michael was robbed at the Grammy ceremony held in 1988 when he gave such a transcending performance of record of the year nominee “Man in the Mirror” that audience members including Billy Joel, Little Richard and Stevie Wonder leaped to their feet, cheering. Maybe Michael didn’t really have much hope of winning, since “Man in the Mirror” wasn’t up for best song (bestowed to songwriters; best record goes to recording artists). Usually, that’s required. In fact, “Man in the Mirror” was his only Grammy bid that year. Its parent disc, “Bad,” had been released during the previous Grammy eligibility period (who curiously changes every year it seems) reaping five nominations, including best album. It lost them all, thus Michael was cheated at the Grammys two years in a row. In fact, “Bad” was so under Grammy standards that the only award won was for Best Music Video - Short Form (Leave Me Alone) in 1989. To add insult to injury the presenters either don’t even recognise him as a nominee or all of the sudden feel the need to remind everyone of the eligibility period right before his nomination for “Bad” - we can only assume it did not go down quietly behind the glares of the cameras.
The Grammys official website use to have until not long ago an article in which they spoke about Michael’s “Thriller” sweep in 1983 and mentioned rather stupidly that ‘That was his best night but a close second was March 2nd 1988, when he got 5 nominations and lost them all.” … They went on to gush over his amazing, hair raising “Man In The Mirror” performance that had the entire elite audience leaping to their feet “belongs to the short list of the greatest performances in Grammy history”. All of this is gone now, replaced with an emotionless timeline of Michael’s Grammy achievements throughout the years. It’s also worth noting when I respectfully asked them about it on their G+ page, not only did my comments get removed but my page is blocked from commenting on theirs as well in a truly professional manner …
There is a reason Michael performance of ‘The Way You Make Me Feel’ and ‘Man In The Mirror’ was so powerful it had the VIP audience leaping to their feet. He had a point to prove; in spite of being robbed of a Grammy award two years in a row, losing out on all his 5 nominations, no other artist could hold a candle to him and he made damn sure every single soul watching in the audience and on screen knew it.
But don’t take our word for it; watch the video and make of it what you will.
