Empty Treasure Chest

I find myself holding on to nothing

But just an empty box.

Glistening jewels, gilded threads

Which once made up the contents of the box,

Have been replaced by dreary dust and cobwebs.

What was it that made me fill

The contents of that box with precious jewels and gems?

Why it was the hand of your giving heart

Which filled our little treasure chest.

Wondrous and ecstatic was I

Ignorant to the ways of my frivolous indulgences

That you reluctantly gave me your gilded hearts

and everlasting promises.

Once again I find myself holding on to nothing

But just an empty box.

Relics of the past are now a distant memory.

Trinket upon trinket each item began to disappear.

My worst fear became reality

And the void in my heart began to reappear.

Once again I find myself holding on to nothing, but just an empty box.
