Prenatal Yoga Develops stamina and strength. As baby grows within our body, more energy and strength is needed to be able to carry the weight.  Yoga poses strengthen our hips, back, arms and shoulders.

If you’re just starting out with backbends we recommend staying low to build the strength in the low back needed to support the spine in #Backbending . #sphinxpose -pull the belly away from the floor, guide the shoulders back and heart forward. #bhujangasana #cobrapose with elbows bent back (not straight) engage the lower abdomen and guide the heart forward. Access the power of your legs and don’t clench your buttasana. Peak pose here is the full expression of the backbend. From cobra walk hands back towards hips as far as you can, keeping elbows slightly bent. Actively roll shoulders down, back and away from ears, elongating neck. Bend knees and lower head back towards feet. Do not hang in the low back, instead engage the lower abdominals to lift you out of the hips and up and back towards the feet. For safety make sure hips evenly square forward and the knee feels no pinching in the joint capsule. For advanced variation with backbend engage the core to lift the top of the sternum, restrain the low ribs so there isn’t a collapsing in the low back. Birds and their ability to fly were infused with spiritual meaning in ancient times. In Indian mythology, birds were symbols of the soul and the form it took in between earthly lives. Lord Shiva once shrunk to a size of a pigeon, because he was living on air in order to avoid experiencing any polarities. Ever since than, Shiva got the name Kapota, as one of his many names. We too can seek to experience equanimity in this posture by continually surrendering to the deep release experienced as you watch body change.”

Chris says it’s important to engage your #bandhas (locks), especially mula (the root) to lift out of the low back and not dump into it to protect the spine. Also, try to really trust the weight of your body in your finger tips.

If you are just starting out, try holding #dolphinpose (pictured above), in good form (engaging the serratus anterior) as a great way to create the strength needed to rise up!
