The danger lies in ranking the oppressions. The danger lies in failing to acknowledge the specificity of the oppression. The danger lies in attempting to deal with oppression purely from a theoretical base. Without an emotional, heartfelt grappling with the source of our own oppression, without naming the enemy within ourselves and outside of us, no authentic, non-hierarchical connection among oppressed groups can take place.
—  Cherrie Moraga, from “La Guera,” This Bridge Called My Back (1981)

PRAXIS

[noun]

1. the process by which a theory, lesson, or skill is enacted, practiced, embodied, or realised. “Praxis” may also refer to the act of engaging, applying, exercising, realising, or practicing ideas.

2. practical application or exercise of a branch of learning; the practice and practical side of a profession or field of study, as opposed to the theory.

3. habitual or established practice; custom.

Etymology: via Mediaeval Latin from Greek - deed, action, from prassein - to do.

[J. Slattum]

"The goal is to depathologize negative feelings so that they can be seen as a possible resource for political action rather than as its antithesis. This is not, however, to suggest that depression is thereby converted into a positive experience; it retains its associations with inertia and despair, if not apathy and indifference, but these feelings, moods, and sensibilities become sites of publicity and community formation…

It rethinks distinctions between positive and negative feelings so as not to presume that they are separate from one another or that happiness or pleasure constitutes the absence or elimination of negative feeling. Depression, for example, can take antisocial forms such as withdrawal or inertia, but it can also create new forms of sociality, whether in public cultures that give it expression or because, as has been suggested about melancholy, it serves as the foundation for new kinds of attachment or affiliation. Binary divisions between positive and negative affects don’t do justice to the qualitative nuances of feeling that are only crudely captured by such designations…

Discussions of political depression emerge from the necessity of finding ways to survive disappointment and to remind ourselves of the persistence of radical visions and ways of living. Rather than a paranoid watch for how forms of resistance are ultimately co-opted, it’s more about noticing and describing the places where it feels like there is something else happening, and passing on strategies for survival.”

-Ann Cvetkovich, Depression: A Public Feeling
(should be required reading for any graduate student)

Lenin’s famous statement: “without a revolutionary there can be no revolutionary movement” (in What is to be Done) means that a revolution is achieved with neither verbalism nor activism, but rather with praxis, that is, with reflection and action directed at the structures to be transformed. The revolutionary effort to transform these structures radically cannot designate its leaders as its “thinkers” and the oppressed as mere “doers”.
The leaders cannot treat the oppressed as mere activists to be denied the opportunity of reflection and allowed merely the illusion of acting, whereas in fact they would continue to be manipulated - and in this case by the presumed foes of manipulation.
—  Paulo Friere (Pedagogy of the Oppressed)
Revolutionary praxis must stand opposed to praxis of the dominant elites, fo they are by nature antithetical. Revolutionary praxis cannot tolerate an absurd dichotomy in which the praxis of the people is merely that of following the leader’s decisions - thus reflecting the prescriptive methods of the dominant elite.

WHEN WHITE MEN TELL US THEY FEEL UNWELCOME IN OUR SPACES

http://www.returnthegayze.com/post/83786016957/when-white-men-tell-us-they-feel-unwelcome-in-our

"Over time: greed, consumerism, and exploitation became celebration: fireworks, patriotism, and fear of losing what can’t be controlled. Somewhere on some prerecorded news, politicians create laws where they call us “illegal” and “terrorists” for defending the land of our ancestors, so the good white Christian family can continue eating a “good” meal and pray to a white man for “guidance.” The cops patrol to protect them from us. There is no mention of the wars in our neighborhoods, mass incarcerations, and a child mourning the murder of her father by the state, bombs falling on Palestine and gunshots killing Mapuche youth. We are still seen as the savages. Where is our celebration in this fuckin’ occupation?"

Degenerate Hues: Guilty Subconscious

http://maroisandme.wordpress.com/…/on-the-uncertainty…/"There are many things that I am unsure of, several of which I would never admit. But I am most unsure of the fate of revolution, insurrection and whatever other romanticized rebellions we cling to. At times, I feel as though I am surrounded by idiots – all of them wearing and doing anything they can to fight in a class war that for them, lasts only as long as they can triumph in the streets. Other times, most of the time, I feel quite isolated within the struggle. I have learned this past year that camaraderie is just a symptom, and being that, inevitably vanishes. This leads me to wonder if communism failed on this premise alone. As for Anarchism, our politics stumble around our values and our values are only held with conviction until our own salacious appetites seem more desirable. Although I have not lost hope in Anarchism, for the Anarchism I believe in is based on the foundation of hope itself, I have lost respect for those who sell it. Lately, it appears that our beliefs have been commodified, even without intentionally becoming inherently capitalist, Anarchism is being sold and its label could not be more incorrect."

Police Repression of Indigenous Protest Against Brasil’s World Cup

http://revolution-news.com/police-repression-indigenous-protest-brasils-world-cup/

“It is our belief and our practice that in order to rebel and struggle, we need neither leaders, nor caudillos, nor messiahs, nor saviors. To struggle, we only need a little bit of disgrace, a good amount of dignity and a lot of organization. The rest is either useful for the collective or it isn’t,”
