El viento helado que se colaba entre los delgados espacios de las ventanas enfriaban cada espacio del departamento, obligando a Joshua, Elizabeth y Devonne acurrucarse entre la calidez de una suéter o un abrigo, inclusive debajo de las mantas. Elizabeth la noche anterior se había encargado de encender el calefactor, cargar los móviles, laptops, linternas y calentar agua por montones, llenando cinco termos grandes de esta.

Para la mañana siguiente ya tenía todo preparado, comidas frías, mucha agua caliente y fría, mantas y cobertores fuera, además de piyamas de franela gruesa para cada uno. Además que Devonne se había colado con Lucky, el cachorro a la cama de Elizabeth y Joshua así manteniéndose segura y abrigada al lado de sus padres, beneficiando a este par completo.


— ¿Alguien tiene hambre? —Pregunto la rubia mientras frotaba las palmas de sus manos, intentando entrar en calor. — Tenemos galletas de chocolate, soda, vainilla; emparedados de queso, jamón y queso, jamón; barras de chocolate y de cereal. No sé ¿quieren algo? —Preguntó intercalando la mirada entre su esposo y su hija.

He felt bad he hadn’t been able to come on Memorial day, but he was here now.

Walking through the rows, he approached a familiar headstone. One he’d been to more times than he wanted to remember.

He didn’t even want to be here, but that’s what happened when you couldn’t save your friends. Dog tags from his time enlisted were heavy around his neck, as they were every time he wore them.

He found the headstone, and took a knee. As he did every year, he told his friend about what had been happening.

He knew someone was there with him, but wasn’t surprised. He’d invited them with him, after all. Once he’d finished, he turned to the other.

"Wanted you to be here, so you could understand why I was so upset the last few days. I’m sorry I never told you……"
