I was down in Chinatown last week so popped into Ming’s Caffe on Canal St. for lunch. I ordered what I usually get on a cold day to warm up when I’m in the area, egg noodles in soup with wontons and roast pork. However, the kitchen did not seem pleased with my order; they felt it was not an appropriate meal for such freezing temperatures. So I was told, “We make you something special, big guy!”

A bit taken aback, I decided I’d just roll with it, see what they thought this “big guy” needed to warm his bones. Turns out, they had a pretty damn good idea what I wanted as the bowl you see above suited me perfectly!

Egg noodles in beef tendon stew with wontons, bok choy and fried pork chops!! The kitchen even added a little extra ginger to the soup to help fight off the cold, they explained.

I will now always happily put myself in Ming’s Caffe’s hands going forward.

Please fire me. Today I brought in a ham sandwich (I work in a hospital as a receptionist) and a man came up to me saying (exact quote) “Hey lady, could you not eat that disgusting peace of cr#p in here, my kid doesn’t like pork.” My sudden response was “If your kid doesn’t like it then he shouldn’t look then, should he?” After that the guy waited outside the hospital and slapped me when I came out after my shift.
