- Longing for Ethiopia -

Many years ago I heard the soft tunes of Mulatu Astatke for the first time. Those soft rhythms that linger into your body would soon lead me to a a new country which I would thoroughly fall in love with, in spite of it being so different from my motherland.

It would take me two visits to Ethiopia and six years before I came to meet the man who, unknowingly, brought me to this beautifully chaotic land. On a cold October night in Oslo I could finally tell Ato Mulatu about the influence his music had, and still has, on the course of my life. Our meeting ended up in laughter, a warm hug and a vinyl record with the following inscription in Amharic; “To Amina, from Mulatu”. The fact that my name is Aline made no difference to the utter joy I felt as I took the midnight bus home holding my signed vinyl record as close as I could.

Ethiopia, I am so glad that I met you.

The first edition of Pop Up Addis Ababa Art Show was a big success!

Over 200 people came to check out the show last night and we received lots of positive feedback. We had three projections of video work on the outside walls - which really transformed the space. There were over 30 2d works hung as well as a live performance. We had a decent amount of sales as well!

We’ll post a few photos here but check back in the next few days for a complete upload of the events and also video to follow. We’ll also be posting over the next few weeks all of the artists works who participated in the show - to have an online documentation / catalog.

We’re planning another show later this fall - location and details forthcoming! Check back to this tumblr as well as the facebook page for details.

Thanks to everyone who came out last night - we really appreciate the support! And also a big thanks to BGI Ethiopia for giving us lots a free beer and hosting the event!
