Maya, Maiyans, Maia and Mayans

Why is the name Maya so important in IS?

Amano Maya: 天野 舞耶 and Okamura Maya: 岡村 真夜 are written differently. Their names were chosen so that both of them could be the maiden of the oracle.

Mayans from South America were just chosen for the whole Caracol and Xibalba plot.

The aliens called Maiyans are from the Pleiades cluster and Maya’s Persona Maia マイア is the oldest of the Pleiades.
The Mayans are essentially portrayed as descending from the Maiyan aliens since there are theories about Mayans communicating with aliens:

Google Mayans + aliens. You will find countless of theories. When the whole Mayan stuff in 2012 happened I saw a TV program which talked a bit about the Mayans. They mentioned the theory and I immediately had to think of my beloved P2 xD.

I loved the Mayan theme in P2 and that they even added in a New Age theory with the crystal skulls.

Ixquic/Xquic:

image

-Ixquic the “Young Goddess”.

Ixquic (Blood Moon /Blood Girl/Maiden, young goddess) appeared in the Quiché (K’iche’) 16th century Maya manuscript Popol Vuh. Her father was Cuchumaquic one of the lords of Xibalba. She is famous for being the mother of Hunahpu and Xbalanque (the hero twins who defeated the Xibalbans and who are the reason why Xibalba fell). She is sometimes associated with the waning moon.

The hero twins were born when Ixquic visited a calabash tree where the Lords of Xibalba had displayed the severed head of Hun Hunahpu (who was tricked and sacrificed in the Dark House by the lords of the Xibalba after being too noisy while playing ball with his brother Vucub Hunahpú).
The head of Hun Hunahpu instructed Ixquic to take one of the fruits which was forbidden. Then he spat on her hand and thus the juice of the calabash impregnated Ixquic with Hun Hunahpu’s twin sons. Of course her father was not happy at all regarding this news (even though she actually never slept with a man), the twins were declared bastards and the Lords ordered Ixquic to be killed.
The people who were supposed to sacrifice her felt sorry for her and tricked the Lords with a false heart made out of tree sap. Ixquic fleed to Xmucane (mother of Hun Hunahpu) who demanded a test to proof that her son is the father of Ixquics’ children:
She should go into the garden and return with a sack full of corn. She didn’t find very much and thus called Ixtoj and Ixq’anil (Ixkakaw and Ixtziya) two daybearers who were related to corn and then plucked the corn silk from the ear.
The silk transformed into corn and the sack filled. Ixquic was accepted and gave birth to the twins alone in the mountains. Her sons later defeated the lords of the Underworld.

In Lak’ech/InLaKesh:

image

image

In Lak’ech was a greeting used by Mayan priests meaning “I am another yourself” or “I’m you you are me”. New age writers like Domingo Martínez Parédez closely connect it with Hunab Ku which was the word for the Judeo-Christian God YHVH/JHWH and monotheism/unity.

Xibalba:

image

image

Xibalba was traditionally said to be a cave in the vicinity of Cobán, Guatemala.
In the heavens, the Road to Xibalba (Xibalbabe), was the dark rift visible in the Milky Way. This is probably why the characters in IS have to cross the Amano river. The World Tree (Yax’ché) grew through Xibalba and each level had its own ruler.
Xibalba also means “place of fear” (which is why the fears of the characters in IS materialize) and it was ruled by two gods called Hun Caquix (One Death) and Vucub Caquix (Seven Death) who were the people who killed Hun Hunahpú and Vucub Hunahpú since they tested them with:

image

Passing The Darkness House, Shivering (Cold) House, Jaguar House, Bat House, Blade (Razor) House and Fire House that no average person could enter without dying.

In P2 the names of the rooms in Xibalba are named after the first 10 days of the Mayan Tzolkin calendar (there are actually 20 days in the calendar) :

image

Imix (waterlily, alligator), Ik (wind), Akbal (night or house), Kan (corn), Chicchan (snake), Cimi (death), Manik (hand, deer), Lamat (Venus, star, rabbit), Muluc (water), and Oc (dog).

Bolontiku:

image

image

The nine gods Bolontiku, ruled over the levels of Xibalba.
Their alien appearance is probably deriving from the Mayan alien theories. Kaneko has apparently watched Star Trek since their hand sign kinda resemble the “Vulcan salute”.

Caracol:

image

image

Caracol is a Maya archaeological site in the Cayo District of Belize.
A native logger named Rosa Mai, came across it and reported the site to the archaeological commission in 1937. In 1938 the archaeological commissioner, A. H. Anderson visited the site and gave the site its name caracol (snail, shell, spiral), because of the winding access road that led to the site. Mt. Katatsumuri in P2 which surrounds Caracol means snail mountain.

Now to the Aztec references:
Nahui Ollin:

image

The Five Suns mentioned come from the Aztec and other Nahua peoples. They say that the present world was preceded by four other suns/worlds of creation and destruction.
Apparently the present world is the fifth sun. The Aztec apparently saw themselves as “the People of the Sun,” whose divine duty was to wage cosmic war in order to provide the sun with his tlaxcaltiliztli (“nourishment”). Otherwise the sun would disappear. They said that the survival of the universe depended upon the offerings of blood and hearts to the sun.
They replaced the original Sun God with their God Huitzilopochtli whose duty was said to be to stop the shadows and destruction.

image

image

This is the Stone of the Five Sun Eras which is actually shown when Xibalba rises.

The Aztec and other Nahua peoples said that the present world was preceded by four other suns/worlds which all ended in an apocalypse.

Nahui-Ocelotl (Jaguar Sun) - Inhabitants were giants who were devoured by jaguars. The Jaguars were Nagual (Guardian angels) of the creator God Tezcatlipoca.
Nahui-Ehécatl (Wind Sun) - Inhabitants were transformed into monkeys. This world was destroyed by hurricanes which Quetzalcóatl created in the form of Ehecatl the wind God.
Nahui-Quiahuitl (Rain Sun) - Inhabitants were destroyed by a rain of fire. Only birds survived (or people who became birds). The God who ruled at that time was Tlaloc the God of Thunder.
Nahui-Atl (Water Sun) - This world was flooded for 52 days turning the inhabitants into fish. A man and a woman escaped but were transformed into dogs when they didn’t listen to the orders of Tezcatlipoca.

Nahui-Ollin (Earthquake Sun) is the present world and is the fifth sun which according to the Aztec is going to be destroyed by a huge earth quake. Skeleton like monsters from the west called Tzitzimime who are demons and connected to stars will appear and kill off everyone.

I personally think that they just wanted to add nother a apocalypse like element (next to the Grand Cross and the tetramorph/four evangelists/four living creatures of the Revelation of John) however connecting to the Mayan stuff they used and found this one in Aztec sources which is why they added this.

Crystal Skulls:

image

image

The crystal skulls are human skull hardstone carvings made of clear or milky white quartz, claimed to be pre-Columbian Mesoamerican artifacts usually attributed to the Aztec or Maya civilizations; however, none of the specimens have been authenticated as pre-Columbian in origin.
The skulls are claimed to exhibit paranormal phenomena by members of the New Age movement, and have been portrayed as such in fiction, television series, novels, films, and video games etc. Basically a typical New Age theory which gives P2 an Indiana Jones touch.
