An Author's Nightmare

Alex was an author, not the most successful one, but he did alright. He had already written a few books, and his latest, about a demon slayer, who ends up losing everything in the end. It was tragic and horrifying, and as Alex had written it, he could feel the terror; he had nightmares about his book characters coming to life every night that year, as he wrote the story, but he never thought anything of it.

Alex had heard, long ago, from his grandfather who was also a writer, that sometimes authors get so invested in their stories that the stories themselves became real to them. Back then, Alex didn’t understand what that meant, he just thought his grandfather was on too many proscription drugs and needed to sleep his high off. Of course, now…now Alex knew exactly what he had meant.

Like any good author, Alex had his secrets, his secret just so happened to start at midnight every night, his secret just happened to be deadly, and he didn’t know how to stop it. He locked himself away in his room, the lights flickered as he looked at the clock one last time and watched as the numbers turned to 12:00. It was that time again, he closed his eyes as he heard the familiar sound of  the thump of the book, seemingly falling on the floor in the sitting room on its own accord.

One may ask, why he didn’t just throw away the book, burn it, put it through the paper shredder, he had tried all those things, in the end….somehow, it always ended up back on his coffee table, ready for the next midnight to come, hoping tonight was the night the demons finally got their revenge on him.
