NETTLECARRIER Signs With INDIE RECORDINGS

Reposted from: Blabbermouth.net

Indie Recordings has announced the signing of Norway’s NETTLECARRIER.

NETTLECARRIER is freezing cold, satanic black metal at its best. Starring T. Ciekals (DJEVEL, LJÅ), Mannevond (KOLDBRANN, URGEHAL) and Dirge Rep (ORCUSTUS, GEHENNA, GORGOROTH, ENSLAVED), the group will release its debut album later in the year.

NETTLECARRIER was formed in 2004 when T. Ciekals, who was a member of the band LJÅ at the time, moved to Oslo and teamed up with Mannevond from the infamous KOLDBRANN. “I had been in contact with Mannevond a few years back and we were both fans of each others bands,” said Ciekals. They had a burning desire to create a black metal band that did not sound like anyone else, but with an older and more sinister sound. In late 2006, Vold joined in on drums for a short while and as a three-piece the pace increased. This resulted in the release of the seven-inch vinyl single, “To Strangle The Hero Of Heaven”.

When Mannevond started Urgehal and T. Ciekals formed DJEVEL, NETTLECARRIER was put on ice for almost three years. “I left LJÅ in 2007 to focus on DJEVEL and Mannevond was busy with URGEHAL, but NETTLECARRIER wasn’t dead, just buried for a while,” explained Ciekals. After the DJEVEL album was released, Ciekals was finally able to focus on NETTLECARRIER again. The very talented Dirge Rep joined the band on drums in 2010 and the decision to record an album was made.

NettleCarrier – s/t (Indie Recordings)

At its heart, black metal is cold and dark. It represents the epitome of evil – as defined by the general masses of humanity. In the turbulent early days of the genre, bands like Darkthrone, Mayhem, and Emperor defined a certain sound, a certain attitude, a fairly rigid template that has since been splintered and redefined in dozens of new, and often intoxicatingly creative, ways. Black metal has evolved to encompass a wide spectrum of sounds, concepts, and ideologies. If word of these changes has reached the cold, dark northern territories of the Oslofjord in Norway, it’s been while the members of NettleCarrier – vocalist/bassist Mannevond,  guitarist Ciekals, and drummer/lyricist Dirge Rep – either were asleep or out stalking unwitting prey in the hinterlands. Or perhaps word of the evolution of black metal is not unknown to the trio, and they simply refuse to accept it. Regardless, this is a very good thing. NettleCarrier formed in 2004, released a single called ‘To Strangle The Hero Of Heaven’ in 2007, and now – 8 years later in 2012 – have unleashed their eponymous debut album, a stunning tour de force that is as pure, as cold, as dark, and as evil as any black metal record in existence. The only differences between the early kvlt black metal sound and that of NettleCarrier’s debut is in the recording and production. Whereas early black metal recordings were, out of necessity, lo-fi and muffled-sounding affairs, ‘NettleCarrier’ is nothing short of a sonic masterpiece – crisp and clear, with excellent separation between instruments, audible vocals that sit perfectly in the mix, and a sharpness that makes the music sound equally compelling and terrifying. There are quite a few outstanding black metal albums on the recently-released racks right now, all with a myriad of viable reasons to stand out and garner well-deserved attention, but it seems to me that NettleCarrier has delivered the black metal album of the year – and perhaps of the decade – with this devastating debut.
