…NCBDC exam looks to go electronic

A proposal to host the comprehensive portion of the NCBDC exam is expected this week. ExamSoft has met with AIBD Executive Director, Steve Mickley, and has analyzed the present Council testing procedures and exam items and will be working out a customized plan to offer the exam in an electronic format. “If the proposal and the implementation seem feasible, I will be arranging a presentation to the Board of Examiners on May 7th.” Steve reports.

Once implemented, the exam procedures offer candidates the option of using their own laptop computers to take eight of the nine sections of the Certified Professional Building Designer (CPBD) exam. The practical portion, which includes a design program and requires a series of hand drawn solutions, will still be offered in its present format. In addition to laptops, ExamSoft is currently BETA testing the use of iPads and predicts that option will be available in 2013. “ExamSoft has minimum requirements and if they can be altered to meet the current NCBDC exam offerings this would be a great move forward.” Steve said. “Offering the exam electronically reduces staff time, it increases exam security, it helps provide test results much faster, and it would open the door to hundreds of potential tests sites that are now not practical or affordable to use.”

James Hinton - a few memories...

AIBD friends,   Here is the link to James Hinton’s obituary. He was only 53! I have fond memories of James. He joined AIBD when Rob Padgett was President and I was VP. He was the only guy I knew who passed the NCBDC exam on his first try! I met James and Wanda Harvill in the fall of 2009 in Macon. We all three crammed into his little-bitty Mini-Cooper and drove to Fayetteville for the meeting! I’m 6’2”, 245 and James was taller and bigger than me. I was in the back seat, facing sideways, all the way to Fayetteville and back! James got lost on the way and we ended up “exploring” some great side roads and scenery along the way.   He was always kind and gentle and he loved God, family and residential design, in that order.

Rest in peace, my friend.   http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/macon/obituary.aspx?n=james-kim-hinton&pid=154527260&fhid=11909   I hope this finds everyone doing well.

…The site of the first AIBD board meeting.

Presently, AIBD Executive Director, Steve Mickley is in California where he has attended the CA Society annual convention and is proctoring an NCBDC Certified Professional Building Designer exam. During his travels in Southern California, Steve forwarded this photo of the building where, according to the meeting minutes, was the site of the first meeting of the AIBD board of directors on July 11, 1950. “Based on the brick style and ornamentation, it appears to me the building is the same as it probably was in 1950, with the exception of the new storefronts.” Says Steve. The building is located at 114 E. Union Street, Pasadena, CA. At that time, the Institute was named the United Designers Association. It wasn’t until 1958

Steve was in Pasadena touring the city and local hotels seeking a site for the AIBD 2013 National Convention.

…Mourning the collapse of Fallingwater.

The architectural community is in disbelief over yesterday’s reports that Frank Lloyd Wright’s 1936 masterpiece collapsed into Dear Run Creek. Engineer Robert Silman, who worked on the home in 1997, said in the NY Times, “The main cantilever isn’t a cantilever anymore.” The force of both the Master Bedroom Terrace and the Living Room Terrace crashing down is great enough to crack the stone ledge below. NY Times reporter Fred Bernstein wrote, “…an ironic end to a house renowned for its symbiotic relationship to nature.”

Even though the builder doubled the amount of reinforcing called for by Wright, “Still, he didn’t add enough steel to solve the problem.” Says Mr. Silman. He adds, “If it was still moving after 60 years, the inevitable conclusion is that it would eventually move far enough to fall into the river.”

Because it was Easter Sunday, tours opened three and a half hours later than usual and no one was in the structure through the morning.

…New member recruitment is up 400%

AIBD has welcomed 41 new Certified and Professional members since July 1, 2012, which is 31 more than at this time last year.  The Florida Society is leading the nation as the top recruiter with 15.6% net Professional and Certified Member growth.

The Texas Institute of Building Design (TIBD), the AIBD’s Texas Society, has the highest number of new recruits - 12 -  yielding a current total of 112. Though this represents only a 10% increase in Certified and Professional members, Texas is leading the Institute in the total member growth column with 12%.

…Texas is awarded a 6th Delegate.

As a result of the TIBD’s growth beyond 100 Certified and Professional Members, the society has been awarded a sixth representative in the AIBD House of Delegates. Societies and the at large membership are allowed one representative for each 24 Certified and Professional members plus the society president.

March 15th is the date when each society’s representation is established on the House of Delegates for the next fiscal year. Unfortunately, Connecticut and Virginia have each lost one representative in the House for the coming year.

The AIBD fiscal year begins on July 1 and ends on June 30. The House of Delegates is the body of voting members given all corporate authority over the management of the affairs of the corporation.

…A search for a convention site.

This week Steve Mickley, AIBD Executive Director, is visiting hotels in Newport and Providence, RI in search for a site to host the AIBD 2015 Annual Convention. Each winter, the House of Delegates chooses a convention city from a list provided by the Convention Site Selection Subcommittee. The AIBD staff then researches potential sites and reports to the subcommittee who makes the ultimate choice. To date, the House has chosen cities through the 2016 event.
