Why I Start My Day With Warm Water & Lemon

I had no idea how beneficial this was for me growing up but everyday, like clockwork, mom would pour out a cup of hot water and squeeze some fresh lemon into the cup.

Usually in a mad hurry to get through breakfast so I could get outside, would gulp it down, scarf my processed breakfast (we lived in blissful ignorance around breakfast cereals, lucky me) and then grab my bike and I was gone.

Fast forward 20 something years to now where I, now knowingly, live my life according to the principles of Ayurveda and yoga that my family instilled in me at a young age.

So why do I think drinking this is a big deal? In a nutshell:

  1. It raises your PH levels so from acidic to a more alkaline internal environment - Disease cannot live in an alkaline environment as it needs acidity to thrive.  When we sleep, our bodies become acidic so the simple act of drinking water & lemon in the morning balances the body.
  2. Empowers your immune & nervous system - Lemons are rich in potassium and vitamin C stimulating your neuro-impulses and strengthening white blood cells.
  3. Improves digestion by removing toxins from the digestive system and promotes bile production in the liver.
  4. Aids in weight loss again due to keeping the body in an alkaline environment.  Lemon is also a craving buster.
  5. Purifies the body by eliminating toxins, clears the liver and the skin.
  6. Calms you with a high level of Vitamin C first thing in the morning.

Oxygen Magazine’s Spiced Apple Shake

Bulk up, belly down! Are you getting about 25 grams of fiber daily? Most Americans only eat about 15 grams a day. A Dutch study showed that people who consumed around 10 grams of fiber per day lost total body weight and reduced their waist circumference. Try this shake for breakfast to make sure you get your daily dose!

Here are a few more reasons to add this drink to your diet:

  • Whey protein contains a unique set of bioactive compounds that have been shown to slow down fat synthesis, while stimulating fat burning and muscle building.
  • Water helps remove waste from your body – a boon when consuming high-fiber foods.
  • Apple skins pack insoluble fiber, the kind that passes through your digestive system largely unchanged, promoting bowel regularity and, in essence, keeping your waistline trim.
  • Prunes deliver high amounts of soluble fiber, which has been shown to control blood sugar levels to provide a sense of fullness, which can help prevent you from overeating.
  • Natural peanut butter is a cholesterol-free and inexpensive protein source.
  • Just a tablespoon of ground cinnamon has the same amount of antioxidants as four ounces of grape juice.
  • Fresh ginger helps to relieve body aches.
  • Cardamom contains cineole, which lends its potent antiseptic properties to kill bad-breath bacteria in your mouth.

Zain’s Clean Holiday Eggnog (Classic OR Vegan)

Eggnog is one of those - you either love it or hate it - beverages.  I personally adore it and I think that it traces back to my time travelling through Europe, more specifically in the Netherlands, when I discovered Avocat, the amazing egg liqueur that they would drown breakfast crepes, waffles and pancakes in.  It was delicious and reminded me of the taste of eggnog, a drink I had been turning down since I could remember.  Was I crazy?

And so began my love affair with eggnog.  Now, nothing gives me that warm & cosy Christmas feeling that a little cup of delicious nog with a splash of something a naughty.

I created this recipe to save on the fat, sugar and carbs that comes with this holiday drink.

Zain’s ‘Rum’ & Eggnog Smoothie

I love me a stiff Rum & Eggnog but its not exactly the cleanest beverage around.  During Christmas time, it used to be acceptable to enjoy one with Christmas Brunch but now I’m not so sure I feel like experiencing the sugar rollercoaster that comes along with it, not to mention the near 400 calories in the traditional drink…YIKES!

If you are an eggnog lover, this is the smoothie for you.  All clean, all healthy, high in protein and sugar-free.  Pretty much a no brainer right?

Ingredients:

1 Cup Zain’s Clean Holiday Eggnog

1 Scoop SUNWARRIOR Protein Powder OR Vanilla Whey Protein Powder
