Wonderful loss

"The embryo’s hands start out as flippers, and then there are cells in the flippers that are programmed to die so that they can create fingers. As humans we grieve our losses. Our grandmother dies and we see it as this awful thing. But science shows us that there must be loss in order for us to move forward; that we must loose something in order for us to grow. Isn’t that just wonderful?”

My math professor, after speaking with my psychology professor, both of whom are absolutely delightful and intelligent people.
