Why was this show the fucking sickest show ever?? Jackie, now happily back from Brazil and going to school at Montclair State University in Jersey (yay! she’s a Jersian!) informed me last week that New Found Glory was to play Montclairfest. NEW FOUND GLORY?! She, apparently, didn’t think this was overly newsworthy, but I’m glad she mentioned it and that she got tickets because it was AMAZING!
I went to Rutgers and they won’t let you do shit (and somehow Rutgersfest still had four shootings this year), but the school allowed stage diving (or, at least, made no attempt to stop it) in an auditorium…with seats! Not many people sat, though, so most people were “safely” caught. Most people stood - yanno - to make it feel like a rock show.
From the moment New Found Glory started playing, kids were running up the narrow staircases on either side of the stage and jumping into the crowd, occasionally sharing a mic and singing a few lines. The band was totally cool with everything. They made no effort to stop them even after someone knocked down Chad’s mic stand. Really, why should they? Jordan even noted that they usually play shows with a barricades and seemed to find this refreshing. He gave everyone he could reach a high-five just because he could. It was a shit show from the start and no one tried to stop it. It was really awesome. People had fun.
New Found Glory played for a little over an hour. It was a college show, afterall, so we were out by about 10:30pm.
New Found Glory played: Understatement Don’t Let Her Pull You Down Hold My Hand All Down Hill From Here Truck Stop Blues Kiss Me (Sixpence None The Richer cover) Head On Collision Failure’s Not Flattering Dressed To Kill Iris (Goo Goo Dolls cover) Truth Of My Youth Listen To Your Friends The King Of Wishful Thinking Forget My Name No Reason Why (Gorilla Biscuits cover) Hit Or Miss —— Blitzkrieg Bop (Ramones cover) My Friends Over You
I know there was an ambulance on campus after the show, but it really didn’t look like anyone got seriously hurt. All things considered, I think most people acted appropriately and walked away unharmed. (Yanno…no shootings or anything.) I had a fucking blast.
