Black Holographic Memory Spotlight On: Metropolarity Spec Fic Collective | Crew/Sponsor

METROPOLARITY was born in a pixelated summer, desperate for a space where technology and community could intersect. We at Metropolarity believe that those without power must take advantage and control of the media outlets that we have access to. We choose science fiction as our lens to create new worlds, identities, self paradigms, and to destroy old, harmful ones.

RECURRENCE PLOT: AND OTHER TIME TRAVEL TALES

the debut book from @afrofuturistaffair creative director & metropolarity founding member, Rasheedah Phillips  ++++++ ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

ACCEPTING PREORDERS: http://metropolarity.storenvy.com/products/6334621-recurrence-plot-and-other-time-travel-tales

ships APRIL 5, 2014!!

The interweaving stories in Recurrence Plot and Other Time Travel Tales present characters whose stories challenge the notion that time flows in only one direction. If you want to understand what is happening at any given point in time, you cannot only look to the past for clues. You must consider the future.

A journalist races against time itself to expose the entity preying on young male teens in Philadelphia. A crystal, memory-storing bracelet transports a young mother back to the day of her own mother’s traumatic death. An unknown force of nature causes time to start flowing backwards…

Using quantum physics as an imaginative landscape, Phillips’ debut speculative collection Recurrence Plot attempts to walk the fine line between fiction and reality, fate and free will, and past, present, and future.

240 pages.

HERE & HERE

(via Weapons of Perception: media literacy from the crew)

Some time ago we decided it would be a good idea to make a brochure for people to take at events. This was good for when people were curious about us but didn’t want to spend their hard-earned money on buying a zine.

So Eighteen designed a brochure that did the double duty of being informative and offering some basic media literacy questions. We ended up calling this section the Weapons of Perception.

What’s media literacy? It’s the ability to actively analyze and understand media messages. How do we do that? We ask some questions, that’s what.

  • WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS MESSAGE?
  • WHAT’S MISSING?
  • WHO MADE THIS?
  • HOW CAN I TELL?
  • WHAT WOULD I DO DIFFERENTLY?

Most of us are never told to ask questions about the movies, TV shows, songs, ads, books, news, and other media messages we encounter at all day every day. Media doesn’t grow out of the ground like a tree, it’s made by somebody! For a reason! And we should be able to figure out why and what for.

It turns out that a lot of people that think media literacy is a good idea. We thought it would be another good idea to make our brochure available for download, so you can print your own copies out.

)) METROPOLARITY SF DISTRO SUMMER SELECTIONS ((

So our distro site is here for the physical pickup action. = )

Our HQ Metropolarity.net needs a lot of love, but since AMC planning took over my life, and I work on computers for $$$, I’m taking a summer vacay from spending any time massaging relevant blog content (although there’s so much planned!). It IS good for keeping up on our events though.

However… the insidious FBook is still the easiest place to keep up on our events, and a lot of our network’s events in Philly and the surrounding area. So peep us there if you really wanna keep up on what we’re doing, where we’re going. (Like actually just check the page from time to time, cause you know how FB likes to manipulate what information shows up for who and when.)

Oh AND WE HAVE AN OPEN CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS TILL JULY 31st DON’T BE SHY NOW PRETTY PLEASE PRETTY PRETTY

OH AND WE’LL BE AT ripexpo IN PROVIDENCE THIS AUGUST 2-3rd w/ heyanniemok & superdefstar

In light of one of the largest school closings in American history, closings that disproportionately affect poor children of color, Brick & Mortar: A Sci-Fi’ed Imagining of Education creates a multimedia sci-fi art exhibit imagining the future of education in Philadelphia, featuring submissions from the students themselves. Metropolarity.net offers a recap of the gallery opening.
