4th Annual Cristal Connors Film Awards: Best Adapted Score/Soundtrack

WINNER:

Mommy- Music by Noia, Music Supervisor: Xavier Dolan

An array of early 2000s pop sensations played in full that evoke both youthful whimsy and reverent nostalgia, building the strongest and most singular aural world Dolan has constructed to date.

NOMINEES:

Boyhood- Music Supervisor: Meghan Currier and Randall Poster

Boyhood is a film that is cognizant of its ability to capture the moment not only by image, as evidenced above, but through music as well. Running the gamut from Sheryl Crow to Arcade Fire, the soundtrack evokes a certain sense of time as well as fine characterization (that god awful Family of the Year song not withstanding)

Girlhood- Music by Para One, Music Supervisor: Celine Sciamma

Triumphant strings coupled with Rihanna exemplify something the film is already brilliant at; capturing and celebrating kinship networks and the malleability of the teenage mind.

The Grand Budapest Hotel- Music by Alexandre Desplat, Music Supervisor: Wes Anderson and Meghan Currier

Utilizing a similar sonic world to some of Anderson’s most recent work, it is nonetheless effective in its establishment of a unique filmic world full of whimsy and quirk.

Whiplash- Music by Justin Hurwitz, Music Supervisor: Andy Ross

The world of manic big band jazz is one that I hadn’t thought of being particularly cinematic until seeing Whiplash, whose particular jazz selections pair nicely with the film’s maniacal sensationalism.
