Impending Geekgasm on Netflix Instant Watch – May edition was originally published on The Geek Curmudgeon

This trailer first played on Tuesday, November 17th 1998 in 75 locations in 26 states, D.C. and Canada. It played both before and after the films it was attached to - The Waterbow, Meet Joe Black and The Siege. Lucasfilm uploaded it their website on November 18th. In those days when promoting movies online was still pretty new and video content still fairly rare, it set a record by getting over 10 million downloads. What was really interesting though, was that TV stations started playing the trailer as part of their news broadcast, as a news story, rather than Lucasfilm paying to have it aired as a commmercial. As with others, I remember logging on to starwars.com and using my very slow dial up modem to download it, which high traffic on the site made it harder still. Its still one of my favorite trailers of all time, and I adore the movie. Star Wars didn’t change with the arrival of the prequels, audiences changed, and not for the better. I was 16 when The Phantom Menace came out. The internet was a new part of our lives then, and I have fond memories of following the rumors online, discussing them on message boards, and then seeing the film in the theater several times that summer. People are far too cynical and negative these days, and they’ve lost the ability to be entertained. I hope their negativity stays away when Episode VII gets here in December 2015.
